After I have extended the bottom tray for printing 11x17 paper, completed the print job, I remove the paper, set the all tabs back to legal size paper, put legal size paper in (or letter size - it doesn't matter) and the tray will not close. It catches about 3" away from closing. I hear it click/click but it won't go any further. I have set the paper size to be legal on the screen. Pushing on the blue 11x17 tab allows it to go in a little further, but then it feels like a spring is catching it and won't let it go any further.

No one else has ever had this problem? Do I need to contact HP directly?

@retired131, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

You may refer to the steps mentioned in this document to know how to load papers in the tray.

You have a tray extension button that you have to use in order to close the tray all the way in. (Step 3 under 'Load plain paper in Tray 1 or Tray 2')

Refer to page 17 of the user guide .

Please note that Tray 2 only supports plain paper type.

Let me know how this goes.

Thank you for answering, but no, that does not solve my problem. I have already loaded the 11x17 paper into the tray, I have completed my print job, and now I am putting regular sized paper back into Tray #2.

I have FINALLY figured it out on my own. The length tab was pushed up to the end of the legal size paper in Tray #2. However, I needed to push that tab all the way to the end (back - not at the end length of the paper) of the tray and push the blue tab til the tray closed up to the correct length. This is not explained anywhere!
