Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have had a OfficeJet Pro 7740 for several months and have been able to print on different paper and envelope sizes, including 5.75 x 4.37 inch envelopes.  I recently replaced the computer, but not the Microsoft Office software.  Now, with the envelopes loaded, when I try to print the 5.75 x  4.37 envelopes using Microsoft Word with the 5.75 x 4.37 envelope selected in Word I get a printer error that says the "paper detected does not match the paper size selected (Letter 8.5 x 11)."  The printer does not have a 5.75 x 4.37 envelope option.  I get the same error whether I select 4x6 envelope, Custom or 8 1/2 x 11 as the printer output paper size.   When I select Custom, I expect to be able to input the custom size, but I don't get the opportunity, unless I am overlooking it.  I would appreciate help printing these envelopes.

When you change the paper in the printer, tell the printer what is going on.

Edits > Update EWS section to include "If printer is on the network..."

For example...

User Guide

Load Paper according to the instructions in the guide.

Next...

Check / Adjust / Retain the Paper at the Printer Display Panel

Open Printer Tray,

If you have not yet done so, add desired paper type

Wait a couple of seconds…

Close Tray

IF applicable for your printer:

Look for a message on the Printer Control / Display Panel,

Click Modify (wording varies), set the paper size and type, Click OK

NOTE:  If the size of the Paper Size is not in the Drop-down menu, Select Custom (likely the last selection in the list)

And / Or

Embedded Web Server (EWS)

If the printer is on the network,

If the feature is supported on your printer,

Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to view / configure your printer.

NOTE:  Laser printer options in EWS are very different from those offered in InkJet Printers.

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper Management

If applicable, check the Advanced section (at the bottom of the Tray and Paper Management menu)

Click Apply to save changes

NOTE:  EWS is also available in HP Smart

Set the Preferences - Windows

NOTE:  This is not necessary when using Word > Mailings > Envelopes.

It might be worth a check if all else fails to work...

  1. Check / enable the printer as the “Default Printer”

Settings > Devices > Printers and scanners

UNCHECK (clear box) Let Windows manage my default printer

Select (Left-Click) your printer from the list of printers > Manage > Set as Default

  1. Select and adjust settings in each category for the Media (kind of paper), source (tray), and paper size.

Settings > Devices > Printers and scanners

Left-Click on (your) Printer > Manage > Printing Preferences

Next

Tab Printing Shortcuts > Click / Highlight your preferred shortcut > Click Apply > Click OK to exit

NOTE - Make changes to a Shortcut

  • Select a shortcut and adjust the settings for paper, source (tray), other settings / Tabs
  • If there is a More > section, check / adjust settings in the sub-sections > Click OK to save sub-menu changes
  • If supported, save the edited shortcut or use “Save As” or “Create Custom Shortcut” to save as a new / different file name
  • Click OK to save the setup

Thanks for trying to help, but I still can't print the envelopes.  I have been informing the printer, I couldn't fine an IP address, possibly because I'm using a cable, and I made the printer the default, but then wasn't sure what I  was doing with the shortcuts and quit.

I'm printing envelopes generated  from an envelope form in  Word.  Word knows the size of the envelope.  I read somewhere in HP Help that I could choose an envelope size close to the actual size or choose "Custom" on the printer screen.  Neither have worked.  When I choose "Custom" is the printer supposed to accept any size or am I overlooking a place where I can enter the size?

Test Results / Proposed Solution

Using Office Professional 2018, Windows 20H2, HP Officejet Pro 9025 Word > Mailings > Envelopes

Envelope

Custom Size

Dimensions > 5.8" wide by 4.4" high

Result > Error > "Size too small" >> Envelope must be (at least) 6.4" in width

Result (self / force corrected) size = 6.4" x 4.4"

So, I cannot create an envelope of the size you want on my printer using my tools.

What does that mean?

Simply that - using the tools (that) I have available, the 5.8" x 4.4" envelope size is not allowed.

Example

Rabbits_and_Chickens_Test_Envelope_Custom_1Rabbits_and_Chickens_Test_Envelope_Custom_1

What to do?

Suggested Solutions:

Use Labels as opposed to trying to print on these envelopes.

OR

Search for a way to force / create the envelope (Another Expert / resource might be able to offer help).

I've updated my notes to include the "If the printer is on the network" statement in the EWS section.

The Embedded Web Server allows you to view / configure your printer via your Web Browser.

You are correct - EWS is not available if you are connected with USB.

The "near to size" advice might be perfectly sound - I don't use it because my printers all have custom size capability.

I do not have anything magic to offer.

Your Custom Size dimensions

5.8" X 4.4"

Tray 1

Remove all other paper from the tray

Load envelopes Face down, flap Left

Five to eight envelopes in the stack
