Hi JD29,

Performing scan function will not be from the paper tray but from the Scanner Glass/ Glassbed/ Flat bed

The below steps will help you on using your scanner.

To scan a photo or document from the control panel to your computer, make sure that the computer is on, the full-feature printer driver is installed, and the HP printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable or over your local wireless network.
Step 1: Load the photo or document
You can scan from the scanner glass or from the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) tray.
  note:
The ADF instructions do not apply to the ENVY 5640 and 5660 printer series.
  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.
  2. Load the picture or document:
    • Scanner glass: Place the item with the print side down on the scanner glass, and then position it according to the engraved guides around the glass. Close the scanner lid.
Figure : Position the item print side down on the scanner glass
Image: Position the item print side down on the scanner glass
    • ADF: Place the item into the document feeder tray. The print side faces up and the top edge goes into the tray first. Adjust the width guides to fit the item.
Figure : Place the item print side up into the ADF
Image: Place the item print side up into the ADF
        caution:
Do not load photos in the ADF. Use the scanner glass instead to prevent damage to photos.
Step 2: Scan the item
Scan the document or photo and send it to a designated folder on the computer.
  1. On the printer control panel, touch the Scan icon ().
  2. Touch Computer to scan to the connected computer.
  3. Touch the name of the computer that you want to save the scan to.
  4. Touch Scan Shortcut, and then select a shortcut that corresponds to the document or picture you are scanning.

    Save as PDF
Use this setting to scan text documents that will not be editable. Use the Save as Editable Text (OCR) to scan text that you can edit.
    Save as JPEG
Use this setting to scan pictures and images.
  5. Touch Start Scan. The printer scans the document or image, and then saves it to the destination specified in the settings.

Hi JD29,

The below document should help

Save multiple pages or several photos into one PDF file using HP Scan.
  note:
HP Scan does not support adding multiple JPEG, PNG, or TIFF photos into a single file. You must save photos in the PDF format to save them all in one file.
  1. Check the following requirements for multi-page document or photo scanning into one PDF file:
    • To save multiple photos into one file, you must use the PDF document-related shortcuts.
    • Use a resolution setting of 300 DPI or lower.
  2. In HP Scan, select the Save as PDF or Document to File shortcut to scan the item.
    • If you scanned multiple pages from the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder), click Save. All pages automatically save into a single file.
    • If you scanned from the scanner glass, load the next page or photo on the glass, and then click the plus button or in the HP Scan preview window to scan the next item. Repeat this step until all pages or photos are scanned, and then click Save.
  3. Confirm that PDF is selected in the Save as type menu, change the file name and the folder you want to save the scan to, and then click Save.
  4. To view your scan, open the folder in which you saved the scan, and then double-click the file.

The HP Scan mentioned above is launched through the printer icon on your desktop, double click, it will open Print Assistant Window, where you will see Scan a Document or Photo option.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Let's run the HP Print and Scan Doctor:

Use this link for details on using the HP Print and Scan doctor: https://hp.care/2JyaC93

If the issue persists, let's do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:

Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.)  Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

15.) Restart the computer.

Once done, please download and install the software from here:
