Hi @CoastalS

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand you are facing a printhead issue with your printer. Let’s get that HP Smart Tank 585 back in action.

A printhead issue can be tricky, but with your knack for structured troubleshooting, we’ll tackle this step by step.

1. Reseat the Printhead

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the printhead compartment and carefully remove the tri-color printhead.
  • Gently clean the copper contacts on both the printhead and inside the printer using a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water.
  • Let everything dry completely, then reinstall the printhead securely.

2. Run a Printhead Cleaning Cycle

  • Open the HP Smart App or use the printer’s control panel.
  • Navigate to: Settings > Maintenance > Clean Printhead.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the cleaning.

3. Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it for 5–10 minutes.
  • Plug it back in and power it on—this can clear lingering error states.

4. Check for Firmware Updates

  • Open the HP Smart App on your PC or mobile.
  • Go to Printer Settings > Advanced Settings > Printer Updates.
  • Install any available updates to ensure compatibility and bug fixes.

5. Inspect Ink Levels and Installation

  • Make sure all ink tanks are at least half full.
  • Confirm that the printhead latch is fully closed and the printhead is seated at a slight upward angle until it clicks into place.

Let me know how far you’ve gotten with these steps, and I’ll help you troubleshoot deeper if needed. You’ve got this! 💪
