HP Office Jet Pro 8620
Microsoft Windows 10 in S Mode

Total frustration at not being able to stop a print job.  May have to return it  for more transparent printer.

New printers don't seem to hold a candle to older models.  Do not want to live with this issue every day so

help is appreciated.  Can't believe I even have to ask!

Side Note:

If you recently purchased an OfficeJet Pro 8620 thinking it is a new printer, it is not "new".

The particular printer may have been in a box - this model series was introduced years ago.

Were it me, I'd return it.

What about print job cancel?

Printers can be more difficult to use with Windows in S mode.

The Full Drivers cannot be installed, for example.

That said, in this case, the printer behaves pretty much like others in its class:

The Print job can generally be cancelled on the printer only if you catch the job before control is transferred over to Print Services.

Fortunately, Windows S mode likely includes access to the Printer Queue and Print Services.

Cancel Print Job

On those printers where the option is supported,

If you catch the job quickly enough, print jobs can normally be cancelled on the printer.

The “cancel” button might be labeled as such or might present as a red X on the printer control screen.

NOTE:  Where supported at all, it is normal for the “X” to show on the control panel only briefly.

What happens next?

Once the job is turned over to the print service, cancel the job in the print queue on the computer

Printer Queue

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Double-Left-Click on your printer icon

See what’s printing

Click (or Right-Click) on the job > Cancel

Exact wording varies.

OR

Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners > Click Open queue

Click (or Right-Click) on the job > Cancel

OR

Settings > Devices > Right-Click Printers & Scanners > Pin to Start

Then

Windows key > find the newly PINNED application tile Printers & Scanners

Move the application tile to a Tile Group that is easy to see and open quickly

Print Queue / Print Service Reset

After a print job has been submitted, it is very quickly turned over the Windows Print Services for completion.

When / If a job is "stuck in the queue", it is sometimes due to Print Services having hung, become stuck, or otherwise failing to properly complete the job.

Start Here:  Print job stuck in Queue

and / or

First, check that Windows Update is not in need to installing updates.

Settings > Update and Security > Check for Updates

NOTE:  If an update is already pending, install that update > Restart the computer and log in

If still stuck…

If the current print job will not cancel or if a previous print job is stuck in the queue,

and

If the issue is due to Print Services being stuck / hung / corrupted, Restart the Print Service

Manual Queue Reset

Details…

Control Panel > icon view > Administrative Tools > Services

Scroll down, find, Right-Click, and Stop Print Spooler Service

Open File Explorer (formally Windows Explorer)

Navigate to the folder and Delete the files from folder C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS

Start Print Spooler Service
