Hello HP Community,

I am an IT Director of a non-profit business. Our department recently purchased a couple of HP Color LaserJet MFP 3301sdw printers, primarily for our owners to use the scan-to-email function when working remotely from home.

After configuring the SMTP server and testing the configuration—which came back successful—we attempted to test the scan-to-email feature by scanning a test document. We ran into a printer error code (C1.BF.FC.0B) during the attempt.

At the time, we had firmware version "6.17.3.269-202405221647," but after doing some research on other HP forums, a post indicated that this particular firmware version was the cause of this error code (Link to post: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printing-Errors-or-Lights-Stuck-Print-Jobs/Hp-Color-LaserJet-MFP-3301f...), so we decided to upgrade to the latest firmware.

After downloading the latest firmware version that was recently released--this version specified in the notes that it mitigated the original error code--(6.17.5.34-202412122146) and uploading it to a USB thumb drive, we updated each printer to the latest firmware version. Once successfully updated, we tested each printer by re-attempting to scan-to-email a document but, unfortunately, ran into another printer error code:

If anyone has suggestions or solutions to mitigate this error code so we can successfully scan to email, that would be awesome!

Hi @GNB_Osiris_IT

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like you're encountering an error code "C8.CB.DD.0B" after upgrading the firmware on your HP Color LaserJet MFP 3301sdw, which replaced the previous error code "C1.BF.FC.0B".

This new error code likely indicates an issue with the printer’s network connection, scanning process, or possibly the email settings after the firmware update. Below are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue:

1. Check Network Connectivity

The error code could be network-related, particularly if the printer is having trouble reaching the SMTP server when attempting to send the scan via email.

  • Verify IP Configuration: Check the printer’s IP settings under the Network menu in the printer’s web interface. Ensure that the printer is connected to the correct network and has a valid IP address.
  • Ping the SMTP Server: Ensure the printer can reach the SMTP server by pinging it from the printer’s web interface. If it can’t ping the server, there might be a network or firewall issue blocking the connection.
  • Check for Network Isolation: If the printer is on a separate VLAN or network segment, ensure that it's not isolated from the necessary resources, such as the internet or your email server.

2. Verify SMTP Settings

Even though the configuration passed the initial test, there could be a deeper issue with the email settings.

  • SMTP Authentication: Double-check the SMTP settings on the printer. Ensure that the authentication method, username, and password are correct, especially if you're using an encrypted connection (SSL/TLS).
  • SMTP Port: Ensure that the correct SMTP port (usually 25, 587, or 465) is being used and that it matches the configuration of the mail server.
  • Encryption Settings: Verify that the correct encryption method (SSL/TLS) is set in the printer’s scan-to-email settings, matching the requirements of your SMTP server.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Rachel,

Thank you for your response.

I can confirm that there is no issue with the SMTP server settings. As you will see in the provided screenshot, I was able to send a test email successfully:

This leads me to believe that it is a firmware issue.

Hi @GNB_Osiris_IT,

Thank you for your response.

The error code C8.CB.DD.0B on your HP Color LaserJet MFP 3301sdw printer typically points to a fuser or related internal hardware issue. The fuser is responsible for bonding the toner to the paper during printing, and an error with the fuser or its components can prevent the printer from completing the print job correctly.

Here are the steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the C8.CB.DD.0B error:

1. Restart the Printer

The first thing you should try is to restart the printer. Sometimes, temporary errors can be resolved with a simple reboot.

Steps:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug it from the power source for about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  3. Plug it back in and turn it on.
  4. Check if the error code still appears.

2. Check the Fuser Unit

The fuser unit is responsible for applying heat to the toner and fusing it to the paper. If there's an issue with the fuser, such as it being overheated or malfunctioning, it could cause this error code.

Steps to check the fuser:

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Open the printer’s main access door to access the toner and fuser area.
  3. Carefully inspect the fuser unit for any visible issues, such as paper jams, toner buildup, or physical damage.
  4. If the fuser looks dirty, carefully clean it with a soft cloth.
  5. Reinstall any components you removed and close the printer access door.

Note: If the fuser is damaged or malfunctioning, it might need to be replaced

3. Check for Paper Jams

A paper jam in the fuser area can also trigger this error code.

Steps to check for paper jams:

  1. Open the printer’s access doors and check for any paper that may be stuck.
  2. Carefully remove any jammed paper from the fuser or paper feed area.
  3. After clearing the jam, make sure there is no leftover paper debris or pieces in the fuser area.
  4. Close the doors and try printing again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

We have a similar issue with a 4301....it appears that the printer is very sensitive to power fluctuations which leads to an error with the fuser, regardless of what you are doing on the printer at the time (scan/print job)

We are still in the process of testing, but issues appear to be resolved with the printer being plugged into a UPS.

Hey TP-George,

Thank you for the insight. I will order a couple of UPS devices and see if this mitigates the issue, and if so, I will follow up on the thread with my findings.

I have the same issue with a 3 month old mfp 4302fdn. Hold us if the ups solve your issue!

Thanks

Same problem here with a Color Laserjet Pro MFP 4302dw.

Happened after a firmware upgrade.

A first firmware upgrade proposed by the printer some weeks ago to version 6.17.3.269-202405221647 lead to error C1.BF.FC.0B when printing some PDF files from a Linux PC. Never seen this error before firmware upgrade. The very same file printed without any issue from a Windows PC on this printer.

We upgraded manually today to 6.17.5.34-202412122146 and got the C8.CB.DD.0B error printing another pdf file from Linux. We haven't yet tried the same file from Windows. Most pdf files print smoothly both from Linux and Windows. The problem is not correlated to file size or pdf version (we tried to regenerate the pdf using an older pdf syntax and the error remained).

Restarting/resetting  the printer do not help.

Support should stop talking about hardware problem for these error codes (fuser and the like) this is clearly a firmware or driver issue.

Some updates :

Using an UPS to power the printer didn't help (was not expecting it to help as the local main is very stable).

My problem has been solved (at least for this pdf file !) after removing the printer from the list of printers on my Linux PC then adding it again. Crossing fingers for the days to come...

Having this issue ever since Updating the firmware on this Printer on 1/24/25 seems to be firmware related as printer was operating fine before the firmware update.

**Update**
I did find in the Log File that I only have Error logs since the firmware updated and a Warning from Before the firmware updated.
