My HP OfficeJet 250 printer does not recognize or accept a new ink cartridge. I keep getting the message "Please remove and reinstall the indicated cartridge, making sure it is correctly installed."

I tried doing a hard reset of the printer, but the same problem/error message continues. I bought 3 new Original 62 Black print cartridges also a 62xl

but nothing helps. A new Color one will be recognized in seconds.

This is frustrating to see a 250€ Printer not working.

I did a Hard reset did all i could find but nothing helped:

Hi @Stoki85

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're facing an issue with your HP OfficeJet 250 printer not recognizing the black ink cartridge, despite installing a new one. Since the color cartridge is being recognized, it seems like there may be a specific issue related to the black cartridge.

Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:

1. Check for Protective Tape on the Cartridge:

  • New ink cartridges, especially genuine HP ones, often come with a protective plastic tape that covers the contacts. Make sure this tape has been removed from the black ink cartridge. If the tape is still on, the printer will not be able to recognize the cartridge.

2. Clean the Cartridge Contacts:

  • Dust, ink, or residue on the cartridge contacts could prevent the printer from recognizing it.
  • Turn off the printer and remove the black ink cartridge.
  • Gently clean the contacts (the copper-colored metal part) on the cartridge using a soft, lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water or rubbing alcohol. Be careful not to damage the contacts.
  • Also, clean the contacts inside the printer where the cartridge connects, using a dry, soft cloth or a can of compressed air to remove any debris.

3. Reinstall the Cartridge Properly:

  • Sometimes, the cartridge may not be seated properly. Carefully reinstall the black ink cartridge, ensuring it clicks into place. Make sure the cartridge is securely installed and properly aligned in the correct slot.

4. Reset the Printer Again:

  • Perform another reset after reinstalling the cartridge. To reset the printer:
    1. Turn off the printer.
    2. Unplug the power cable from the back of the printer.
    3. Wait for about 30 seconds.
    4. Plug the power cable back in and turn on the printer.
  • This might help the printer "re-detect" the cartridge.

5. Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up-to-date, as a firmware bug could be causing the issue.
  • You can check for updates either through the HP Smart app (if you have it installed) or by going to the printer's settings menu on the printer's touchscreen.

6. Test with Another Black Cartridge:

  • Even though you’ve purchased a new black cartridge, it’s worth testing with another new cartridge in case there’s an issue with the one you’ve installed.

7. Reset Ink Cartridge Settings (via HP Support Assistant):

  • You can reset the ink cartridges using the HP Support Assistant or the HP Smart App. Sometimes, the printer might not correctly detect the cartridge due to software errors, and a reset can resolve that.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Rachel,

i tested all of the mentioned Tests, except point 7 as i can not find were to reset the printer cartridge.

I got into service menu, did a partial reset and then a full reset, Updated to firmware: TZM1CN2349CR.00

I tested 3 new HP 62 Cartridges and im pissed off having to buy 90 € of cartridges to find out that the Printer just does not want to work.

I  know the printer ist out of waranty but its ridicioulus to see that this issue got faced by several people with this printer and most time its not the Cartridge its the printer itself.
