Same issue with Officejet Pro 8600. Printer will do copy and internal print of diagnostics from printer touchscreen. Any jobs sent from my windows10 pc to the 8600 via either ethernet network or direct USB connection results in immediate "error - printing" message that stalls the print que. I have tried everything sugggested here multiple times and I still have a printer than prints but no way to communicate with it. I have spent hours researching and troubleshooting. THERE MUST BE A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM. Ideas??

Welcome to HP support community.
Use HP Print and Scan Doctor to check connectivity
Download HP Print and Scan Doctor.
-
Run HPPSdr.exe from the download location on your computer.

Once HP Print and Scan Doctor opens, click Start, and then select your printer.
-
If your printer in not in the list, turn it off and on, and then click Retry.
-
If there is a connection problem, follow the instructions in HP Print and Scan Doctor.
-
-
If a screen prompts you to turn on printer updates, click Yes.
-
If a screen prompts you to make your printer the default printer, click Yes.
-
Try to print.
Perform root level uninstallation to remove all the printer related software's.
- In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
- Select your HP printer.

After 3 days of repeated troubleshooting printing issues with 2 different hp printers and 2 win 10 computers, none of the suggestions above worked. Online blogs noted issues with Microsoft Win 10 update pushed end of September 2019 (KB4517389) with no mention from microsoft yet although a patch for Win 10 downloaded on 10/10/19 did not resolve the printer issues. Most of suggested fixes I found and tried involved stopping the print spooler or deleting the files in windows program files for print spooler or uninstalling and reinstalling print drivers. None of these fixes tried using different procedures with printer on or off or unplugged worked. The fix that worked for me was to go into settings>devices>printers and scanners>choose involved printer (eg. HP 8600 network)>manage printer>printer properties>ports>Add Port>Standard TCP/IP Port>YES add new port>enter your printer's IP address in the box for Printer Name or IP Address>Port Name box autofills with the same IP address>Next. This fix changes the printer port and resolved 3 days of struggle trying to get both printers working again. ??September Windows 10 update bug?? Is this really due to the windows 10 update? None of either computer or printer settings was changed prior to the print issues.
It seems like after clearing all temporary files and resetting spooler and uninstalling and reinstalling the print drivers and rebooting the computer, I was able to send one print job successfully to either printer. After this successful job, some temporary file or ??? prevented the printer from receiving new print jobs from the computer and the print queue stalled with print error message and sometimes even refused to cancel all documents so had to be reset with measures mentioned at beginning of this paragraph. That is, it seemed like something Win 10 was doing in sending the print job to either printer caused an error that prevented the next and all subsequent jobs from printing. I sure hope this fix holds and does not mess up something else. Any suggestions or critique welcome. Hope this helps others. I clearly am not the only one with this problem.
