Hi @Glennadams

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

That flashing “E” with no number on your HP Smart Tank 455—and all lights blinking—is usually a sign of a fatal error state or a firmware glitch, especially if the ink tanks are full and there’s no obvious paper jam or printhead issue.

Let’s try a few proven steps to reset the printer and clear the error:

Step-by-Step Fix for HP Smart Tank 455 “E” Error with All Lights Flashing

1. Perform a Full Power Reset

  • Turn off the printer using the power button.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall and the back of the printer.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and power on—this clears internal memory and resets sensors.

2. Check for Printhead Issues

  • Open the printhead access area.
  • Make sure both printheads are seated properly and the latch is fully down.
  • If you recently replaced them, try reseating or cleaning the contacts gently with a lint-free cloth.

3. Run a Printhead Cleaning Cycle

  • If the printer powers on normally after reset, use the HP Smart app or printer control panel to run a printhead cleaning.
  • This can help if the error was triggered by ink flow or nozzle detection issues.

4. Update Firmware (if accessible)

5. Factory Reset (if nothing else works)

  • With the printer powered on, press and hold the Cancel + Wireless + Copy Black buttons together for 10 seconds.
  • This triggers a factory reset—use only if other steps fail.

If the printer stays in the blinking state even after these steps, it may need a service reset from HP support or a firmware recovery via USB.

Let me know if you want help with that process—I can walk you through it. You're doing all the right things by checking the tanks and error codes. Let’s get this sorted.
