Welcome to the HP Community --

Unless there is something very odd going on -- possible though unlikely -- the application is indeed dependent on the rest of your Windows environment, including your network.  If the network is slow to respond, the app will drag, hang, refuse to work as expected.

If not already done, one of the best things you can do is read your printer's user manual.

Yes, I know -- so many pages and it can be slog.

There is usually a lot of good, basic information in the document.

Product Home - Printers

Enter the device type and model name of your HP product

Open Category Setup & User Guides

Find and open the user manual and whatever else looks helpful...

=======================================================

Switch off your VPN.  If you don't know that that is, you are not using it.

Part of the dependence on the network is due to the many features in the application that depend on access to your HP account, your printer(s), any Shortcuts created to work (for example) with Cloud accounts.  I've read that HP Smart might work with nothing more than a USB connection between the computer and the printer -- I've not seen it.

If your printer is supported by a full driver printer software, perhaps install that -- the full driver includes HP Scan.

What?  HP Smart is generally optional -- use something else...

What do to?

I'm not sure, though I can certainly provide you places to look, recheck, and perhaps adjust some of your setup.

Were it mine to solve,

If it's not done now,

I would assign the printer it's own IP address .

In fact, I'd assign the printer, the computer, and any other device their own IP address.

Doing so can help stabilize the network.  (Opinion, no need to defend.)

What else?

  • If your Wireless is weak, won't work, bores you, irritates you, or is hard to configure >> Consider using Wi-Fi Direct:  HP printer setup (Wi-Fi Direct)
  • Wi-Fi Direct is not quite the same thing as standard Wireless network but it's likely to work and it can get you out of your "can't do anything" hole.

What else?

Examples only -- no need to defend!

  • Network hogs might on the local computer include, Browsers with lots of tabs open, open games.
  • Network hogs might be other devices - TVs, game boxes, phones, tablets, other computers
  • Network obstacles might include a poorly placed (located) router and / or a router that is outdated, weak, not fully configured
  • Network configuration / location -- if forced to depend on Wireless (Ethernet is better if you / the printer can use it) -- could include too much distance between the printer, the router, and the devices that need to connect to the printer.
  • Wireless - 5GHz is faster but it's fussy about distance and doesn't like obstacles (walls, furniture, stairs).  2.4GHz is slower but is more tolerant of distances and obstacles
  • Bluetooth -- HP Smart / HP App uses Bluetooth once at the initial attempt to discover and connect to your printer.  The printer -- unless it is one of a few odd birds of the printer world -- does not use Bluetooth as a way to connect the printer to your network / device (computer).  For example, the initial connection might take 45 seconds to find the printer -- that's a very long time when standing around waiting.
  • Try standing near the printer and connecting the HP Smart Mobile app on your supported iPhone.  Once the printer is discovered and connected using HP Smart on your mobile device, the printer might more easily connect to your other devices (computer)
  • Perhaps switch on "Network Discovery" and "File and printer sharing"  on your ComputerSettings_NetworkAndInternet_Advanced_Network_Settings_Advanced_Sharing_Settings_2Settings_NetworkAndInternet_Advanced_Network_Settings_Advanced_Sharing_Settings_2

Beware of Fake Sites

Be very careful when out on the Internet looking for help - one little dot, space, or letter out of place can land you in trouble.

The official HP 123 site is where you can find the appropriate (and free) software and drivers for your printer.

There are many “fake” sites listed (in search engines) for “123” – please make sure you are using the actual “HP” site.

If you are asked for money to correct "issues" on your printer or computer OR if the “help” wants to sell you software, threatens you, or wants access to your computer, you are using a “fake” site. Do not give these people your information!
