The issue on my printer seems to be the ink carriage that is only able to move about half an inch to the left before it stops. It seems to be a hard stop. It is at this precise moment that the error code appears. the ink cartridges are properly set in place.

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP.
They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact.
Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

Welcome to the HP Support Community
To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:
Could you please help me with the exact model name or the product number of the printer.
Check if you can move the carriage manually.
Look for any obstructions in the carriage area.
Keep me posted.
Have a great day!
Cheers:)

The product number is P4c81A
The carriage will only move about 1cm from the extreme right , and this is automatically or manually, under power or with the power disconnected. The obstruction seems to be towards the back ot the printer. The motor and the notched belt do not seem to be involved in the malfunction. It is of course very difficult to see what might be the problem (which seems to be mechanical) without screwing off the top (which I have not yet done). The problem appeared suddenly , shortly after a successful printing job.

Thank you for your suggestion and instructions on how to call HP technical support. The cartridge carrier was blocked from moving by the the waste ink tray. I was able to move the latter out of the way by turning the cogged wheels (on the left side). The waste ink receptacle got stuck again on the following alignment pocedure. Strangely enough, the cleanliness of the waste ink receptacle and the messy inky condition underneath of where the receptacle should have been led me to conclude that this feature never worked properly (if at all) . Now that it tries to work, I am in trouble.
Thanks
