HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am getting the error message "Printer Failure...There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn the printer off, then on. If problem persists, contact HP."  I have tried all the troubleshooting methods suggested on the website in previous posts.  I have done a partial reset and a semi-full reset multiple times.  I have done the other things that are always suggested like removing the print cartridges, removing the print cartridge assembly and cleaning the printhead.  I have tried to install the firmware but it won't retrieve a "ready" status from the printer so it won't let me proceed.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer software.

Please send me instructions on how to do a total reset of the printer or any other confirmed fix for this issue.  The issue began occurring on two identical printers at the exact same time about two months ago so it must have been some HP software update that messed them up.  Please help

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand that you are getting printer failure error, I am glad to assist you.

Reset the printer

  • Reset the printer to recover from printer failures.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the power source.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.
  • NOTE: HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

Check for obstructions in the carriage path

  • Clear obstructions from the carriage area inside the printer.
  • With the printer on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Open the door to access the carriage inside of the printer.
  • Look in the carriage path for debris such as crumpled paper or dislodged labels, and then remove any that you find.
  • Obstruction inside the printer
  • Use your hand to move the carriage to each side, making sure it moves freely. If the carriage is stalled or docked to one side of the printer and you cannot move it, continue with these steps.
  • Moving the carriage from side to side
  • Close the carriage access door.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then turn the printer on.

I waited for 4 days for a reply and then when the reply came it was clear that you did not read my issue... and what I asked for.  I clearly stated that I have already done all of the things that have been suggested in other older posts and elsewhere.

In another post for this same issue people were sent instructions via private message on doing a total reset of the printer.  That is what I am asking for.  Those other posts said things like this:  "We'll have to perform a reset on the Printer for this. I have sent you a private message, for more details that cannot be shared in a public post."

That is what I am asking for as I have tried everything else.

You might have to perform a semi-full reset on the printer to fix this issue.

The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.

I am sending you a private message with the steps to reset the printer. Please check the mailbox icon at the top-right corner of this screen.

I hope this helps resolve this issue completely.

To thank me for my efforts to help you, please mark my post as an accepted solution so that it benefits several others.

As stated in my original post, I have already tried partial and semi-full resets multiple times.  Is there no way to do some kind of "full" reset or something drastic like that?

We have 3 of these printers.  Two of them are connected to the internet and get automatic updates, etc.  The third one is not connected to the internet and does not get updated automatically.  When an update was pushed out a couple of months ago both of the connected printers no longer worked.  The unconnected printer is working fine.

I just need to have some way to put the old firmware back on them or something.  I have tried to install firmware from the HO website, but it won't install because of the error status of the printer.
