I can't create a new custom paper size for cheque.
I did the following steps in the user manual of your printer.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05050200
Page 35 - Print on special and custom-size paper.
It provides details instruction (steps 1,2,3...) on setup the custom paper size.

But still printer refuse to print on cheque paper and paper size dismatch error appear in the printer screen when i try to print Using " envelope c" paper size the closest size to cheque and i quote " the paper size detected by the printer in tray 1 does not match the paper size selected(a4(210*297mm)) for printing job "

The following may work (or at least give you a "starting place"):

When you close the printer tray (after having loaded the media into the tray), select to "Modify" the paper, select Custom as opposed to a "close size" setup.

If you have not done so, create a Custom Paper Size form and select that form when you are adjusting the settings to submit the job to the printer.

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Printing Preferences > Paper Quality > Paper Sizes > Custom

Click once on a template in the list that is "close to what you want" >

Click New > Add a Name for your new form > Edit the Width and Length (Height) >

Click OK

Create the check content, adjust the settings and select your custom size form, submit the job.

"Closest to" does not usually work, though I would not place a wager on that - odd things do happen on occasion.

If the custom paper size option exists, Custom Paper Size form setup will be in one of two places.

  1. Two methods to assign custom paper size forms

Availability depends on printer model and software and Operating System / Version

  • Devices and Printers > Print Server Properties

       OR

  • Printer Preferences > Print Dialog > Paper / Quality > Custom setting

Example 1

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers >

Left-Click on your Printer one time to highlight >

Left-Click Print Server Properties (along the top ribbon)

Devices_and_Printers_Print_Server_Properties_1Devices_and_Printers_Print_Server_Properties_1

Custom_Form_Index_Card_6x8Custom_Form_Index_Card_6x8

 OR

Example 2

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers >

Right-Click on your Printer > If necessary, select printer from drop down menu / list

Printing Preferences > tab Paper/Quality > Custom

Printing_Preferences_Quality-Paper_Custom_1Printing_Preferences_Quality-Paper_Custom_1

  1. Depending on Printer Model / Software, changing the paper in the tray may require that the paper settings be adjusted on the printer control panel.

  • Open Tray > Change Paper > Check printer control panel: “Modify” > select “Custom” > OK)

The custom paper form will not likely "transfer" itself to the printer control panel.  Regardless of having created the custom form on the computer for the purpose of printing on an "odd" size paper, the printer -- if it supports modifying the paper settings at all -- will show the standard sizes, plus the option "Custom".

Nothing I say is "in stone".  I have a slightly different printer (Officejet Pro 8740), which might be "just different enough" that the options I describe may not be available on your printer.

In particular, even assuming all things equal for "Custom" settings, your check printing software may not cooperate with the custom settings / setup.

thanks for your effort.

But in my printer, there is no "custom" under paper size. So I want to ask if my printer does not support creating new paper size?

The feature depends on having installed the Full Feature Software.

Ordinarily

If you cannot find the means to create the custom form, it does not exist.

EXCEPT

I do believe the ability to create custom paper sizes exists in the Officejet Pro 8720.  I have the big brother to the 8720 (Officejet Pro 8740) and the two printers are indeed similar.

As a reminder:  "Custom" form setup is explained in Creating Custom Paper Sizes

So, I don't know why you cannot find the setup.  I should think the printer full feature software supports it.

IF you have installed the Full Feature Software,

If the printer is on the network,

If you find a printer in Devices and Printers that is named HP Officejet Pro 8720 (Network),

Open that device as described (Right-Click > Printing Preferences),

Check for the custom paper size setup button.

IF that works, set HP Officejet Pro 8720 (Network) as your default printing device and try using that.

If the custom paper size setup works, that is, you can create the custom paper size form, but the custom form does not then show up in the software you are using to create / submit the check to the printer, the fault, if there is one, MIGHT be that the software you are using is not accessing the printing preferences as edited and instead is only accessing some form of the paper size list from the standard settings.  I have read about this (various members writing in and comments that Publisher cannot use / see custom form, for example).  Having never seen it, I have not any experience dealing with the phenomenon.
