My HP LaserJet 1018 shows up under unspecified device in control panel. I feel like I've tried everything to get the driver to install. I've read numerous threads about using the built in driver install. Nothing is working. Super frustrated.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
- Connect printer via USB cable
- In Devices and Printers, LasetJet 1018 shows under Unspecified device section
- In Devices and Printers window, right click on LaserJet 1018 and select Properties in drop-down menu
- Select Hardware tab, make sure list points to Type: Software devices option and then click Properties button below
- In Properties General tab, click Change settings button in the lower left corner (don't miss this step as it opens up buttons that are otherwise greyed out in the Driver tab).
- In new Properties pop-up window, select Driver tab. Click Update Driver
- In Update Drivers window, select Search automatically for updated driver software. This should update the HP Laserjet 1018 driver and automatically move it from unspecified to printers section in Devices and Printers, which will allow printing

I have tried the previously recommended steps. After requesting a driver update, I get the message "best drivers for your device are already installed", although the device is showing up in the window as "generic printing device". When I check the 'device drivers' tab, it says "no driver files are required or have been loaded"
