You are probably not doing anything "wrong", though you might have missed a step in the setup.
This is especially important if you are printing from a mobile device.
After you load the paper in the printer,
Alert the printer to the paper size / paper type loaded in the printer tray.
Example - Retain / Modify / Check Tray and Paper Management
What else?
What else you do depends on your Operating System / version and the software / application you are using to view and submit the job to the printer. (Unknown)
