HP OfficeJet Pro 8720
iOS

Just bought HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 and can't adjust to better print quality settings using IOS mobile device. The standard print quality is around 200 dpi. How do I get it to print at higher resolution?

Hey there! @J0Seppi

Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues, with help from the community!

I understand you need to know how to get better print quality from your printer using a IOS mobile device.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Are you using any app on your IOS device to print?

Does the issue persist when you make a copy from your printer?

Try printing using HP AIO app from your IOS device and check if it helps.

Refer this article to know more information about using HP AIO app.

Also, Try printing using HP wireless direct and check if the print quality improves.

Connect your Apple iOS device directly to the printer with Wi-Fi Direct or HP wireless direct.
On the printer, make sure a solid blue light is on next to the Wi-Fi Direct/HP wireless direct button or an Wi-Fi Direct/HP wireless direct icon displays on the control panel.
Press the Wi-Fi Direct/HP wireless direct button or navigate the control panel menu settings to find and touch Wi-Fi Direct/HP wireless direct.
On your Apple iOS device, tap Settings, and then tap Wi-Fi.
Under the Choose a network menu, select your printer. The printer name begins with DIRECT.
If prompted, type a password. The default password is 12345678.
   NOTE:
If you are using a Wi-Fi Direct/HP wireless direct connection, be sure to go back into Wi-Fi settings and connect your Apple iOS device to your network.

Refer this article to know more information about printing from HP wireless direct.

Let me know if this helps!

Have a wonderful day ahead! 🙂

What I was asking is to understand how I can vary the settings i.e. Draft, normal or high quality print. Their seems no way of getting better than normal print (looks like draft though). How can I select the quality I want to suit the printed output I may need according to requirement at the time? I use IOS on phone and ipad. I do not us a laptop or desktop.

@J0Seppi, thanks for your quick response and time.

I appreciate your efforts for trying out the steps.

As you mentioned you needed to know to print best using your IOS devices.

A number of pixels in your photo determines how big you can print at high quality. The more pixels your image contains, the bigger you’ll be able to print without it becoming pixelated and fuzzy.

So the higher the PPI, the smaller the print will be, and the better quality it will appear. The lower the PPI, the larger the print will be, and the poorer quality it will appear.

So if you have a 12 megapixel iPhone and you want an excellent quality professional-looking print at 300 PPI, the biggest you can print your photo is 14.29 inches by 9.49 inches. But if you’re willing to print at 150 PPI, you’ll be able to have a much larger photo.

If you’re interested in how to calculate these sizes, you simply divide the image size by the PPI. So if your image is 4288 pixels wide, divide that by the PPI of 300, and you get 14.29 inches which is the width of your printed photo.

Now that you know how big you can print your pictures at different qualities, let’s explore some of the options you have for turning your iPhone photos into beautiful prints.

You can try downloading some photo editing apps from istore, change the settings and try printing.

Hope this answers your query!

Cheers! 🙂

So what you're saying is that there is actualy no way to vary the settings from draft, normal to best quality. I've never used a printer that didn't give choices from low to high quality prints. I have tried printing various types of documents, but I was hoping for a choice of print quality at the driver end of the equation. I totally understand each source docuent has it's own resolution, but that's not what I'm asking. I want to vary print quality output, like every other printer/print driver I've ever used.

@J0Seppi, Thanks for your quick response and time.

Have your tried printing with an Android device does the issues persist?

The degree of control you have on print settings when printing from a mobile device depends on the method you are using to print and to some extent the content you're trying to print. I would recommend you use the ePrint mobile print app which you can download from iTunes. Using this app allows you set print settings including Draft and Normal modes as well as selecting Grayscale instead of color. These options are available when you print web pages, documents or emails from within the app. If you print photos they will print in color and default to photo media.

If you send emails with file attachments to the printers email address you have no control over print settings. Similarly using AirPrint does not allow you much control over print settings.

I'll keep an eye out for your response.

I hope you have a great day! 🙂

I apolgise if I sound as though I am being difficult, but I own an IOS device and your asking me to try using an Android device? Do we all need to get new phones and new iPads to have any control over print quality?

I will try the e-print app you suggested, but I simply don't get why the native drive allows no print quality control. I wouldn't care exept the quality is so much fainter than the 6 year old Epson I am replacing that does allow me to choose ouput qulity and doesn't need me to replace my device to do so. If they simply set the native print quality at a higher image quality then I would't be asking this. To set it at what I estimate as 200dpi ( I have spent 30 years in the reprographic/print industry so I have an OK idea about dpi) without the ability to set it at a higher output only invites new customers to              become disgruntled ones.

OK I tried downloading and using e-Print as you suggested, and it is an Enterprise Solution and I am not running a network or server array from my home. I just want to print better than faint prints by having the option to have better quality when I need it and draft mode whn I dont.

Have you tried printing using AirPrint?

You have mentioned you were using e-print to print, try printing using air print and check if the print quality improves.

As mobile applications have limited options for printing, so you cannot change dpi from your IOS devices.

However, refer this article to know how to print using Apple Air Print.

I'll watch your reply!

Have a great day ahead! 🙂
