When I go to Print I get a Message  "Hold for Authentication" What does it mean and how do I fix it

is most likely means that you are attempting to print to a shared print queue and the credentials on that queue have changed.

The most likely scenario is that when the print queue was created it prompted for a user name and password on the first print job.  The password dialog has a check box to save the credentials in keychain.  If you select to save the credentials it creates a static keychain for that print share.  If that share is tied to a domain password and you eventually change the domain password then the credentials will no longer work and you will get that message in the queue.

The easiest fix is to open the Keychain Access app on the macOS client and delete the entry for that print share.

It will show under password as the print queue name.

Then the next time you print to that queue it will prompt for credentials again.

While I was waiting for your reply I found an easier way to fix it and that was to delete the Printer completely and reinstall it from Scratch, and presto it works like a charm, which also has me wondering why these easier and quicker ways are not put forward as an alternative to the question asked. (we are not all geniuses when it comes to computers)

I am very glad that deleting and recreating the queue worked for you.  Often times in the scenario the macOS will continue to try and use the same credentials even when creating a new queue to the same share.  That is the only reason I went with that approach.  But your point is well taken.  We can offer the queue deletion as a first step.

Thank you for your response and information.
