Hp 8620
iOS 12 - 12.0.1

I have a iPad and iPhone. Xfinity gave me a new b6 router modem, now I lose wireless from these devices Once or more times per day. My older modem router worked fine. I am told to old router modem was set WPA, new router is WPA2. And can’t be changed to WPA with the new system and pods.

my work around now is turning the printer off, then on again. Doing this it will work again for sometimes a full day.

@REH23,

Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support community!

  • The WiFi network that you have is that a 2.4GHz network or a 5GHz network?
  • If your router is a dual-band, does the 2.4GHz and 5GHz network have different names?
  • Are the iOS devices and printer connected to the same network all the time?

The printer HP OJ pro 8600 is compatible with the 2.4GHz network only.

If you have a dual-band router with the same name, it might cause connectivity issues.

You can differentiate the 2 networks by providing them separate names and connecting the printer to a 2.4Ghz network only.

With this, the connectivity will be more efficient.

It is a dual band new Xfinity b6 modem, with both 2.4 and 5 Xfinity has x-pods to ad whole house WiFi with this modem and they combine both speeds together and it becomes automatic as it selects the best speed. You connect to the modem with one password which was for the 2.4 speed when they were separate. However because my 8620 printer is less then five feet fron the modem in my office. The modem automatically selects 5ghz speed I believe. I have no way to change the speed down to 2.4 ghz. And have whole house WiFi.

@REH23,

Does the 2.4GHZ network and the 5GHz network have different names or are they having a common name?

If both the networks have the same name, there will some connectivity issues.

Usually, there would be a settings page(EWS) on the router to differentiate the 2 networks.

You can provide 2 separate names for the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz network and connect the printer to the 2.4Ghz network.

With this way, the printer remains connected and the connectivity would be stable.

If you are not sure about the settings, you can contact your Router manufacturer or your Internet service provider about distinguishing the networks.

I clearly stated that this new Xfinity b-6 modem is part of the XFi system. It also uses x-pods to give whole house WiFi.

it is 2.4 and 5 ghz combined with one password to automatically choose the best speed. The printer in in my office approximately five feet from the modem. So I believe the closer a device is to the modem it automatically chooses the faster speed 5ghz farther away in the back of the house most likely its 2.4 ghz. In order to have whole house WiFi the two can’t be separated. New technology.

can’t HP do a firmware update to fix this problem according to post on line I am not alone with this problem. I am a instink subscriber. Does the newer HP printers have this problem also. Like the HP 8730?

@REH23,

The newer HP Printers are dual band compatible i.e it supports both 2.4GHz and 5Ghz networks.

So connectivity will not be an issue on the newer models.

The wireless hardware on your printer has a limitation i.e it will only connect to the 2.4GHz network.

So firmware update would not make any difference.

Most of the modern day Routers are dual-band. The internet service provider may have disabled the 2.4GHz network. But it can be enabled.

I would request you to contact your internet service provider once and check if you can enable the 2.4GHz feature on the WiFi.

if so, you can connect the printer to the 2.4GHz network and have better connectivity.
