I have an Officejet Pro 8620 it is pretty old maybe 10 years or so. It has been very reliable, i change the ink cartridges when they run out. Recently I got this message: the printhead appears to be missing, not detected, or incorrectly installed. Error code: 0xc19a0023

Hi @MiamiRayW

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The Error Code 0xc19a0023 on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8620, indicating a missing or incorrectly installed printhead, is a relatively common issue that can happen with HP printers as they age. This error often appears when the printhead is not seated properly, is dirty, or is damaged. Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Turn Off and Unplug the Printer

  • Turn off your printer using the power button, and then unplug it from the power outlet. Wait for about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on again. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve error messages.

2. Check the Printhead Installation

  • Open the printer and access the printhead compartment. You’ll typically need to lift the printer's top cover or open the ink cartridge access door.
  • Remove the ink cartridges to expose the printhead.
  • Check the printhead's position: Make sure that the printhead is securely seated in place. If it appears loose or misaligned, gently push it back into its correct position.

3. Clean the Printhead

  • Over time, ink buildup or debris can cause the printhead to fail to detect properly.
  • Remove the printhead (refer to the printer manual for instructions on how to do this for your model).
  • Clean the printhead contacts: Use a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly dampened with distilled water to wipe the electrical contacts (the small metallic pins) on both the printhead and the area where it fits into the printer. Make sure not to leave any moisture behind.
  • Clean the printhead nozzles: You can gently clean the printhead nozzles with warm water if they seem clogged. Be careful not to damage the printhead.

4. Reinstall the Printhead and Cartridges

  • After cleaning, reinstall the printhead and ink cartridges.
  • Make sure everything is securely in place, and there are no gaps or misalignment between the printhead and ink cartridges.

5. Check for Ink Cartridge Issues

  • Inspect the ink cartridges to ensure they are properly installed. If any of the cartridges are damaged or have leaked ink, they could affect the printhead.
  • Replace any faulty cartridges if necessary. Even if you think the cartridges are full, faulty cartridges can still cause problems with the printhead.

6. Perform a Printhead Reset

  • If the issue persists after cleaning and reinstalling the printhead, try performing a reset of the printhead.
  • Power off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for at least 1 minute before plugging it back in and turning it on.
  • This reset can sometimes clear error codes related to the printhead and help the printer detect it correctly.

7. Check for Firmware Updates

  • HP occasionally releases firmware updates to address bugs or printer issues. Make sure your printer has the latest firmware.
  • To check for a firmware update, connect the printer to your computer or network, then go to the HP Support website and search for your printer model to download the latest firmware.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
