I have an HP OfficeJet 4650 printer. I was also getting the error message to remove and reinstall the indicated cartridge (black). I tried cleaning the contacts, I tried doing a hard reset by removing the plug for a few minutes and then plugging in the power cord, and did a factory reset. None of these methods fixed the problem. The suggestion to remove the cartridges, pull the plug, wait several minutes, press the power button to make sure all power is drained, plug back in, and then reinstall the cartridges, cleaning the contacts, etc nothing works. This just starting happening out of the blue. Is anyone still getting this error after
trying all these options?

Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support community!
- Does the printer work just with the color cartridge in a single cartridge mode? Have you tried making a copy?
- Have you tried using a spare or an old black ink cartridge on the printer? Do you get the same error?
- Are you using a Genuine compatible HP ink cartridge for the printer?
- Check the compatibility list below:
Please provide the above information to assist you with accurate resolution.

Hi Atharva
Yes if I remove the black cartridge it prints. I was the original cartridge that came with the printer. I had the cartridge refilled
at Costco back in February. It was working up to a couple of days ago. It's a 63XL cartridge and I can't believe it's out of
ink already because I don't print that much. In fact sometimes I can get it to print but it only prints one or two pages.
I also tried a new remanufacture cartridge but no luck at all I get the same message. I'm I to believe that you can't you
a refilled HP cartridge or a remanufactured cartridge. Thanks for your help

You can use a remanufactured or a re-filled cartridge.
But we usually do not recommend it because the ink quality will not be the same as Genuine HP cartridge.
Also, there are chances that the print head would get damaged if the ink quality is not good.
It also voids the printer warranty if there is any damage due to the usage of refilled inks.
You can try purchasing a Genuine ink cartridge and check if that would work.

Thanks Atharva
If that is the case then why would I be getting these messages to remove and re-install the cartridges. Is there some
parameter that I need to check to use these types of cartridges. The only thing I found was about cartridge protection which
is unchecked. Has anyone else had this problem that you know of with this model. This printer is still under warranty until
June and if there is a hardware problem I need to get it fixed. If it's not hardware then there has to be a software type of
protection from using other than HP?

HP cartridge protection is a setting that would allow you to disable the use of one printer cartridges on a different printer if it is enabled.
I think it could be an issue with the ink cartridge that you have purchased or the printer head.
You can isolate the issue by purchasing a Genuine ink cartridge and installing on the printer.
If you still have the same problem with the newer ink, then the print head is faulty and you have to service the printer.

Ok I purchased an HP cartridge and that works. So tell me why at least doesn't the orginal cartridge that was refilled at
costco not work?? This must trigger something that says the cartridge is out of ink or something on that order.
I keep getting the message to remove and reinstall the cartridge

Great to know that the new ink cartridge fixed the issue.
I think the re-filled cartridge could be faulty. Sometimes if the head goes bad on the cartridge, it may not be recognized by the printer.
And this might trigger the message to remove and re-install the cartridge.
Cheers!
