Another unfortunate -- and possible -- reason the printer cannot print might be related to the previous owner having had an Instant Ink contract on the printer.

People do this all the time -- they sign up for the service and then drop the printer off at a Thrift store or sell it at a yard sale.  Unsuspecting new owner is shocked that the printer won't print and issues weird complaints about the ink.

1)  If the Instant Ink subscription contract was not cancelled, the printer is tied to the dead Instant Ink account.

2)  If the contract was cancelled but the owner left the Instant Ink / subscription cartridges in the printer, then these must be removed.  A new set of HP cartridges can be purchased and installed.

Any previous contract has to be untied from the printer.

and / or

If a new set of cartridges does not work on its own and the printer complains that you should sign into your account, then there is likely an old service contract still lurking about.

To do that, contact Instant Ink Support.

Know going in that the Support team lives to sell you an Instant Ink plan for your printer.

You can say No.

You do NOT, not need a subscription to Instant Ink.

.

Just say No, Thank you - and ask that the printer be untied and freed so you can use it.

On the other hand, if you print regularly -- or a lot -- and purchasing ink is a burden --

AND

You want to commit to the Print-by-Page subscription model. then, sure - sign up.

What else?

This is an economy printer -- it's suited to light printing tasks and home use.

Something important here:

DeskJet printers, including this model, typically require a larger margin along the bottom edge.

If you rotate the print, the larger margin moves to the side.

Borderless PrintingNo
Print Margin Bottom (A4)12.7 mm
Print Margin Left (A4)3 mm
Print Margin Right (A4)3 mm
Print Margin Top (A4)3 mm

There is no software, firmware, or alignment that changes the larger margin requirement.

The solution to "chopped off" is to keep all data inside of 1/2 inch / 12.7mm on the bottom edge.

This limitation includes all text, images, page numbers, footer information, cells, tables, lines, other notations, and all file types, too.

For example,

Create your original document with 1/2 inch margins.

When the document is Exported to PDF and printed, it has less chance of balking or being chopped.

Thank you very much for your advice.  I have contacted HP and after 45 mins on phone I gave up. The assistant was constantly asking permission to come on to my phone.  Which is a definite NO NO. I couldn't understand why they couldn't just take the old information off their system and put my on.  Persume as that person hadn't give permission....  GDPR !!

I will buy new carditridges and see how I get on

Thank you

You are welcome.

That does not sound right -- HP follows strict rules about privacy.
