I have a Deskjet 4255e and an error code of E0.  I have installed new print cartridges twice and still get the error code and can't print. I have no instructions on how to fix this problem. Can you help?

Hi @Farlio

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

The E0 error on your DeskJet 4255e usually points to a cartridge recognition issue—even if the cartridges are new. Let’s gently walk through a few steps to help your printer recognize them and get back to printing smoothly.

It’s understandably frustrating to see that error after replacing cartridges twice. Let’s bring some clarity and calm to the situation with a few focused steps that can help reset the printer’s recognition and clear the error.

Step-by-step to resolve E0 error on HP DeskJet 4255e

1. Power reset the printer

  • Turn off the printer using the power button.
  • Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and from the wall.
  • Wait for 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on. This refreshes the printer’s internal memory.

2. Remove and reinstall cartridges

  • With the printer powered on, open the cartridge access door.
  • Gently remove both cartridges.
  • Check for any protective tape still on the copper contacts—sometimes it’s easy to miss.
  • Reinsert the cartridges firmly until they click into place.
  • Close the access door and wait to see if the error clears.

3. Clean cartridge contacts

  • Power off the printer and unplug it.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Gently wipe the copper-colored contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer.
  • Let everything dry for 5 minutes before reinstalling.

4. Check cartridge compatibility

  • Make sure you’re using HP 67 or HP 67XL cartridges, which are the correct type for the DeskJet 4255e.
  • If you’re using Instant Ink cartridges, ensure your printer is connected to the internet via Wi-Fi or LAN.

5. Update firmware via HP App

  • Open the HP App on your Windows PC.
  • Select your printer > Advanced Settings > Printer Updates.
  • Install any available updates. This ensures the printer can recognize newer cartridges properly.

6. Reset the printer settings

  • On the printer’s control panel, press the Cancel and Wireless buttons together and hold for 5 seconds.
  • This triggers a soft reset and may clear internal cartridge errors.

If the error persists after these steps, I can guide you through checking the cartridge status via the HP App or help with deeper diagnostics. Just let me know how the printer responds.

You’re doing everything right by staying calm and methodical—let’s get it printing again.
