My hp 8610 all-in-1 printer won’t turn off and is stuck in initializing mode. Also, the printer screen has an error saying Printer Failure—problem with ink or printer system. I have replaced all ink cartridges and have tried to do a partial reset by slowly touching the back arrow 4 times. I did everything the screen prompted. At the end of the process, the above printer failure message came back on PLUS the screen saying not to turn off the printer since it was initializing. I left it alone for several hours but it wasn’t doing anything. I then unplugged the printer from both the printer and the wall, removed the ink cartridges, turned it back on, got the screen for inserting the ink, then the printer failure notice came back up along with the initializing in progress screen, I did this 3 different times.
what else can I do?

Hi @Meme225,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP OfficeJet 8610 is experiencing a serious issue with its ink or printer system, especially given that it’s stuck in initializing mode and displaying a “Printer Failure” message. This can be a frustrating situation, but here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:
**1. Check for Physical Issues
A. Inspect Ink Cartridges:
- Make sure the new ink cartridges are genuine HP cartridges and compatible with your printer model.
- Double-check that the cartridges are installed correctly and securely. Remove and reseat them if necessary.
B. Examine the Printer Internals:
- Open the printer and carefully inspect the printhead area for any visible obstructions, paper jams, or foreign objects. Gently remove any debris you find.
**2. Perform a Hard Reset
A. Power Cycle the Printer:
- Unplug the printer from both the wall outlet and the back of the printer.
- Wait for at least 60 seconds to ensure all residual power is discharged.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
B. Reset Without Cartridges:
- With the printer off, remove the ink cartridges.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on without the cartridges installed.
- Once the printer initializes, turn it off again. Then, insert the cartridges and turn the printer back on.
**3. Check for Firmware Updates
A. Update Firmware:
- Visit the HP Support website and search for your printer model.
- Download and install any available firmware updates for your printer.
**4. Perform a Printer Self-Test
A. Run Diagnostic Tests:
- Use any diagnostic tools or self-test features available in the printer’s control panel or via the HP Smart app to identify potential issues.
**5. Check Printer Status
A. Review Printer Error Codes:
- If the printer displays any specific error codes or messages, refer to the HP support documentation for guidance on those codes.
**6. Perform a Factory Reset
A. Factory Reset:
- If accessible through the printer’s menu, perform a factory reset. This will return the printer to its default settings, but be aware that it will erase all configurations.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
