Hi @Dianne1013,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are getting an error message the "Problem with Printer or Ink System" error on the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus can be caused by a few different factors.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

1. Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait 60 seconds, then plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  • Check if the error persists.

2. Check Ink Cartridges

  • Remove the ink cartridges and inspect them for any plastic tabs, protective covers, or tape that might still be attached.
  • Reinsert each cartridge, ensuring it clicks firmly into place.

3. Clean the Printhead Contacts

  • Power off the printer and open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove the cartridges and gently clean the electrical contacts on the printhead and cartridges with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Allow the contacts to dry, then reinstall the cartridges.

4. Reinstall the Printhead (If Removable)

  • Some Officejet models allow the printhead to be removed. If yours does:
    • Remove the printhead carefully, clean the contacts, and reinstall it.
    • Be sure it snaps into place securely.

5. Perform a Printhead Cleaning from the Printer Menu

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead.
  • This process may take several minutes and can use some ink but often resolves ink-related errors.

6. Update the Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Check for firmware updates through HP Smart or HP’s official support website. An outdated firmware version can cause printing issues.

7. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Unplug the printer while it’s on and disconnect any USB cables.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes before plugging it back in, then turn it on.
