I am not saying it is a system issue here. I have also reviewed your post. All I am saying is that there may certain driver conflicts between this printer and the latest OS version. The only way to isolate that is to perform the push button reset. Now the Push button reset is not a drastic move. it does not cause you to lose data if the correct options are followed on the screen during the process.
You may need to reinstall the apps though. Besides, you will need real-time support to check what is happening on the machine. Phone support could check by remoting into the computer in real time. They should be able to assist you here in a better manner as they will be able to see in real time what is happening. Besides, the would give you real-time instructions on what to do.
Take care and have e great day.

Okay.
I've spent many hours resetting my PC, reinstalling programs, then starting again.
A reset PC prints without problems, but somewhere along the line the problem creeps back. I have kept meticulous records of the order of installation, to home in on the little gremlin causing the problem, and my conclusion is that it is Microsoft maintenance that trickles in during those first hours.
In other words, Office 2010, plus the maintenance that Microsoft insists on applying, is at the root of the conflict.
So I have no solution, unless HP can figure out why this printer has the problem.
I bought the printer direct from HP (in the UK) and I'm about ready to send it back unless this is solved.
Can you tell me please how I go about it?

Hi @Clive8, I am the Mr.Robot. It looks like you were interacting with @DavidSMP, but he is out of the office today, so I'll take over from here.
I appriciate your efforts for trying out the steps.
As you mentioned the issue still persists after trying out the steps.
Try few steps recommended below.
You can set the printer's Page Size from PowerPoint's Print dialog box.
Choose File, Print from the main menu bar (or in 2007, Office Button, Print, Print).
Under "Printer", next to "Name" select the printer you want to use.
Click Properties to open the Document Properties dialog box for your printer.
Choose the paper size you want to print to. Each printer is different, so we can't give specific instructions.
Clik OK to close the printer's Document Properties dialog box and return to the Print dialog box.
To see the results of your change without actually printing, click the Preview button in the lower left corner of the Print dialog box (in PowerPoint 2002 and later).
Changes you make here affect the printer for just the current PowerPoint session. If you quit and restart PowerPoint, or even switch to a different program to print a different document, you'll need to check your printer driver settings again.
To change the default printer settings, choose the Windows Start button then choose Settings, Printers. Right-click the printer you want to change and choose Printing Preferences from the pop-up menu. You'll see same dialog box as above, but the settings you make here will be the default printer settings.
If the issue still persists after trying out the steps.

I appreciate you are trying to help, but these are not getting me anywhere.
(I was an IT professional for over 20 years. I do know my way around Office.)
The frustrating thing is that the preview always looks fine. My computer is upstairs and the printer is downstairs, so I rush down, hopeful, and the result is alway wrong.
This is not a Powerpoint issue. The same thing happens in Word - whenever I print 2-pages-per-sheet or 4-pages-per-sheet, and there are large images on the page.
It seems to me as though the images are sent to the printer, with instructions for the printer to do the down-scaling, and it cannot do it properly. If they were down-scaled on the PC before sending then any error might affect both my HP printers, but it only affects the 6970.
Thanks again. I do appreciate your time.

@Clive8, Thanks for your response and time again.
As you mentioned you have tried all the steps but the issue persists.
Try the steps recommended below.
This issue occurs if you have used the Paste Special command in PowerPoint to paste the image as a picture. This converts the image to a Windows Metafile Format (WMF) vector image. If the original image was a bitmap, such as a Joint Photographic Exchange Graphic (JPEG or .jpg) file or a Portable Network Graphic (PNG) file, the bitmap is "encapsulated" in the WMF format. This may cause the advanced graphics features of PowerPoint to not print as you expect.
To work around this issue if you want to convert images and clipart to a different image format, use the Paste Special command to paste as a picture (PNG). The PNG format uses a "lossless" compression algorithm, so that information is not lost if you convert the image to this image format.
Also, try disabling the UAC on your PC and try printing again.
- Type UAC in the search field on your taskbar. (If the search field isn't visible, right-click the Start button and choose Search.)
- Click Change User Account Control settings in the search results.
- Then do one of the following:
- To turn UAC off, drag the slider down to Never notify and click OK.
- To turn UAC on, drag the slider up to the desired level of security and click OK.
- You may be prompted to confirm your selection or enter an administrator password.
- Reboot your computer for the change to take effect.
If the issue still persists after trying the steps, please contact HP phone support they should be able to take remote of your PC and assist you in solving your issue.
Please mark my post as accepted solution if you feel I have answered your query.
Hope this answers your query!

I reviewed the post comprehensively. I am really glad that the issue has been fixed with the installation of Office 2016. So it was not actually the printer then. As a team, we tried everything and Kudos to you for sticking with it. Your immense perseverance and terrific temperament are admirable.
This is music to your ears and mine. I hope the product works great and stays healthy for a long time. Now based on the earlier issues, the steps were given by to correct the situation.
Finally, as the adage goes, all's well that ends well. I am glad that things have been taken care off.
If you think this helped, then to simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.
Take care and have a blessed year ahead. Stay healthy and smile big:)
Cheers!

Indeed, it was not the printer.
It seems to be the interaction between the 6970 driver and MS Office 2010. The problem did not occur on my other three printers (including HP 8600), so it would be worth HP looking at what is different in the 6970 driver.
Problem fixed, albeit at the expense of a great number of hours and the cost of two Office licenses.
Thanks for your help, David and Mr. Robot.
