I have just obtained an Officejet Pro 8500a. The first thing I dis was plug it in and it immediately came on and started doing things that sounded like it was going through a startup routine. There was then an improper shutdown message appear on te screen. It only shows up for a few seconds then seems to reset and start over, again showing the same improper shutdpwn message. I have tried to unplug and restart as directed on some of the other forum answers, but this continues. I have not yet been able to connect the printer to the computer.

Greetings!
Welcome to the HP Support Community. This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries. I have reviewed your post and I understand you are getting an error about "Improper Shutdown".
Appreciate you trying the steps. Don't worry, I'm here to help!
Let's try these steps -
1) Turn on the printer, if it is not already on. Take out the cartridges.
2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.
3) Wait for 30 seconds.
4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not to a surge protector.
5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.
Also, try updating the printer's firmware. Refer to this document for steps.
Hope this helps!
Let me know how that goes.
