I have loaded 5" x 7" paper and selected that on the control panel, set up print to print 5 x 7 but get an error on the printer screen.

Anyone any idea how I can print on 5 x 7 paper before this printer goes in the bin?

P.S. this system claims not to recognize the printer serial number.

Not sure -- some of your setup is obscured behind the menu box in the front.

Ideas:

  • Full Feature Software is not installed - full driver printer software provides a foundation for configuring most printing
  • Software is installed but not selected - Microsoft Drivers / IPP class drivers do not provide full setup / configuration
  • Job configuration is incorrect - for example, paper size and paper type are not "matched" in Printing Preferences and / or the Source (Tray is not selected)
  • Printer hardware is failing in some odd, undetectable manner - least  likely, certainly possible
  • True - old hardware, products no longer in Warranty generally fail a serial number check during an attempt to submit a case to HP Support.  HP Support does not typically accept "not in warranty" case submissions.
  • We do not judge - if you wish to "bin" the printer, consider donating or recycling.

Details - some of the places to check / adjust the setup

Tray and Paper

After paper is loaded, alert the printer to the paper size and paper type.

Note that supported paper sizes / type and source (tray(s)) vary by printer

It appears that the Full Feature Software is perhaps not installed.

Example - Windows - Full Feature Software - Installed

Programs_and_Features_Printer_Desktop_Icons_9Programs_and_Features_Printer_Desktop_Icons_9

What else?

If the printer software is installed, it looks like the full driver is not being used.

Check whether the Printer Properties are set to use the installed Full Feature Software driver.

Example - Printer Properties - Advanced - Driver selection

Windows 10

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Right-Click on your Printer > Printer Properties

(If necessary) Change Properties

Tab Advanced

Windows 11

Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Select Printer >

Printer Properties > Tab Advanced

What else?

Depending on the application you are using

-- and whether the full driver printer software is installed and selected --

It is possible the paper size and paper type selected in the job configuration are not a "matched set".

For example, do not select paper size Index card or Plain Paper 5x7 when you are actually loading and using Photo Paper

Next,

Try Selecting the Source / Tray as opposed to leaving the source set to "Automatic".

For example, your printer supports 5x7 photo paper in Tray 1 (not the photo tray)

LIkely not relevant but in your picture, the paper guides do not appear to be  set properly. If you are trying to print with the guides not set it could be part of your problem.

That was just for the photo, the guides were against the paper when I tried to print

Ideas:

  • Full Feature Software is not installed - full driver printer software provides a foundation for configuring most printing

I've downloaded and installed the software from your link and it's made no difference.

  • Software is installed but not selected - Microsoft Drivers / IPP class drivers do not provide full setup / configuration

How do I select the software? (64bit Windows 10)

  • Job configuration is incorrect - for example, paper size and paper type are not "matched" in Printing Preferences and / or the Source (Tray is not selected)

Selected Tray 1 but no difference.
