I have gone through every video online as well as the info provided through hp and nothing has worked. Because the computer is an older model, (hp Officejet Pro 8600 Plus) hp support does not recognize it and will not provide any assistance. I cannot even get a live person to talk to or to contact me. I have been on about every page in hp that I could find that might work or that would allow me to get some answers and, after more than 2 hours, I have no solutions!
What has anyone tried to solve the ink jet failure error?

Hi @LB809,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help you!
I understand that you are having issues with the ink system failure.
If you have performed all the steps from this document and still having issues, this could be hardware.
I recommend you contact phone support.
For that to happen, we will give you additional instructions/information via Private Message.
Please check your inbox on the forums page for the private message.

Thanks for the response. I do have an older model, one in which hp is not recognizing the serial number, so there is no way to get around that serial number verification.
Though this is an older printer, hp should be thrilled they have an older product that is still working!! How many companies can say that about their products?!?
But, since it is still working, it would be great to have hp service them still! Any way you can help with that problem (on top of the ink system failure problem)?
Hope you can help.
Thanks!

Hi @LB809,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
An “Ink System Failure” error on the HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus can be frustrating, especially if you're unable to get support from HP directly. This issue often involves problems with the printer's ink system or hardware components. Here are some comprehensive steps you can take to try to resolve this issue:
1. Reset the Printer
- Turn Off the Printer:
- Press the power button to turn off the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and wait for about 60 seconds.
- Plug In and Restart:
- Plug the power cord back into the printer.
- Turn the printer back on and see if the error persists.
2. Check Ink Cartridges
- Open the Cartridge Access Door:
- Ensure the printer is turned on and wait for the carriage to move to the center.
- Remove and Reinstall Cartridges:
- Carefully remove the ink cartridges.
- Check for any protective tape or packaging that might have been missed.
- Reinsert the cartridges and ensure they are securely seated.
3. Clean the Contacts
- Make sure the printer is off and unplugged.
- Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to clean the contacts on the ink cartridges.
- Gently clean the contact points inside the printer where the ink cartridges make contact.
- Allow both the cartridges and the contact points to dry completely before reinserting the cartridges.
4. Check for Paper Jams
- Open and check all paper trays, the rear access door, and any other areas where paper might be jammed.
- Carefully remove any paper you find and ensure no small pieces are left inside the printer.
5. Update or Reinstall Firmware
- Visit the HP Support website and search for firmware updates for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus.
- Download and follow the instructions provided to update the firmware.
- Go to “Devices and Printers” on your computer, select your printer, and uninstall it.
Reinstall Drivers:
- Download and install the latest drivers from the HP Support website.
6. Perform a Printer Diagnostic
- Download it from the HP Support website.
- Follow the prompts in the diagnostic tool to identify and fix issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
