@Firenze1, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're encountering an "Ink Cartridge Problem" message on your HP ENVY 5540 All-in-One printer, even after installing a new cartridge and reseating it multiple times. Let's work through this together.

Check Cartridge Compatibility

Ensure the cartridge is compatible with your printer. The HP ENVY 5540 series typically uses:

  • HP 62 Black and HP 62 Tri-color cartridges
  • Or HP 62XL high-yield versions

Power Reset the Printer

Sometimes a simple reset can clear internal errors:

  1. Turn the printer ON.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall outlet.
  3. Wait for 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord back in and turn the printer ON.

Clean the Cartridge and Electrical Contacts

Dust or ink residue can cause recognition issues:

  1. Remove the cartridge.
  2. Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  3. Gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge and the corresponding contacts inside the printer.
  4. Let them dry for a few minutes, then reinstall the cartridge.

Try Another Cartridge (if available)

If possible, try using a different cartridge (even an old one) to check if the issue is with the cartridge or the printer.

Update Printer Firmware

Outdated firmware can cause cartridge recognition issues:

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
