HP Officejet 5255
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I have replaced the ink cartridges 3 times (both black and Tri-Color) and have not gone through a ream of paper.  I purchase the 63XL which states you get 2.5X pages compared to the 63 black ink cartridge.

This has become ridiculously expensive.  Can someone please explain how (logically) this can happen.  I probably print 4 x a week but only a few-several pages at a time.  I have not printed any pictures, just documents (word; excel; some powerpoint; occasional PDF)

Is there a way to determine how many pages are being used per cartridge?  How can I be sure that the cartridges I am purchasing - via Staples - HP brand - are in fact full.  is there a way to check to see if in fact the cartridges have run out of ink?  I hate to be so suspicious but it is very frustrating and expensive.

Thank you.

Thank you for the quick reply with link.  I had viewed this link previously, however, it does not seem to justify/answer the issue of such low output.  Perhaps HP should take into consideration the ink used to maintain the health of the print head; residual ink; and the ink that evaporates - and adjust their prices to reflect these discrepancies.

If most of your printing is in B/W you should consider a laser or a ink tank system like Epson has.

If you turn off the printer every day leave it on.

Hello Dean - Most of my printing is not B&W and what I am printing should not require a laser printer and/or ink tank system.  Again, it is what should be considered normal printing - also, there is only one person printing to this printer.  The printer is not shut off, however, I believe it does 'sleep' when not in use and this is by design of the model.

Bottom line is the ink does not last and/or print any where near what is claimed or stated.
