I just replaced the ink cartridge, (which cost me $56.49) and the printer started smearing ink. I exchanged the cartridge for a new one, thinking the cartridge must be defective. The printer is still smearing ink. I realize this is an older printer, but there must be a way to solve the smear problem. HP, so far I find your customer service very poor. Can't believe I can't contact an agent via live chat or phone. Come on, HP, step up here.

Can you scan or take a photo of your print post here so we can see the smear?
It could be something simple as a dirt on cartridge holder rubbing the ink on a paper like a brush while cartridges moves.

That is dirt or something on a cartridge holder. You need to open cover remove cartridges and check for something that is brushing your paper during the printing process. In most cases, a residue of dust first and hair create a brush that is rubbing your paper you need to remove it.
It should be on the bottom part (facing the paper) on a cartridge holder just clean off and your print will be fine.
