HP Office Jet Pro 8020

I purchased ink cartridges on Amazon for my printer. They were installed and worked fine for a couple of days, now I'm getting an error that says, "Cartridge cannon be used until printer is enrolled in HP Instant Ink". The cartridges I purchased are HP and I have no desire to be in the Instant Ink program. Please tell me how to fix this. I am upset with this printer and your program and if this isn't resolved I'll definitely not be buying any HP products in the future, and I'll be sharing this story with consumer watchdog organizations since this amounts to fraud given the significant amount charged for these ink cartridges.

Hi @rush93304,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your frustration, and it can be frustrating to encounter issues like this. The error message you are seeing is related to HP's Instant Ink program, which is designed to provide automatic ink cartridge replacement services. It's possible that the cartridges you purchased were originally intended for use with HP Instant Ink, and the printer is trying to enroll in the program.

Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue.

Disable Web Services: You can try disabling the web services on your printer. This might stop it from trying to enroll in the Instant Ink program. Here's how to do it:

  • Go to your printer's control panel.
  • Select "Web Services."
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to disable web services.

Check for Firmware Updates: Sometimes, firmware updates can address compatibility issues. Make sure your printer's firmware is up to date. You can typically do this through the printer's control panel or via the HP website.

Use Genuine HP Cartridges: While you mentioned that the cartridges you purchased are HP, there are different types of HP cartridges, and some are designed specifically for use with the Instant Ink program. Ensure you are using standard HP cartridges that are not tied to Instant Ink.

Reset the Printer: You can try resetting your printer to its factory settings. This might help remove any residual settings associated with Instant Ink. Be aware that this will erase all printer settings, so you'll need to reconfigure it.

Check Return Policy: If none of the above steps work, consider contacting Amazon regarding the ink cartridge purchase. They might have a return policy that allows you to return or exchange the cartridges if they are not functioning as expected.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
