Is still have a bunch of HP cartridges type 56 (black) and 57 (Tricolor).

Although they fit in the 7640 it does not work.

The cartridge for the 7640  the 62 which looks the same.

The HP 56 and 57 cartridges are several generations older than the HP 62 cartridges.  They use different inks, have different number of nozzles and have different operating parameters.  Bottom line - the cartridges are not compatible and cannot be interchanged.

 

If you have unopened HP cartridges it may be possible to exchange them for cartridges used in your new printer.  For cartridge exchange of HP cartridges unopened and in-warranty see the post here.
