HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e Wide Format All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My printer keeps kicking up "Info" messages, "Warning" messages, "Error" messages and "Critical" messages in the Event Log. On some of the events, I have to power the printer off in order for it to function properly again. I have it connected via WiFi on an ASUS mesh. Does anything exist that details what these event codes mean?

Hi @hbd120

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

For HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e error codes and event messages, you can refer to a few sources:

HP Support Website:

  • Visit the HP Support site and search for your printer model. There should be a user guide or a support document that details common error codes and messages.

User Manual:

  • The user manual typically includes information about error messages. You can usually find a PDF version on the HP support page.

HP Printer Troubleshooting:

  • HP has a dedicated troubleshooting section on their website. You can enter your specific error message or code to find more detailed information and solutions.

Event Log:

  • If your printer’s event log is accessible through the printer settings, check if it provides more context for the messages you're seeing.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for the boilerplate copy and paste from your knowledgebase. Perhaps update it to reflect that the 9730e only displays an error code in the event log and no description?

1. User Guide - No error codes

2. Reference Guide - No error codes

3. Event Log - Error codes, no description

4. HP Web site - No mention of error codes

5. HP Community - Sporadic error codes mentioned, but not mine

I checked everything suggested *before* I posted my query.

Why doesn't HP provide this information?

"Have you tried turning it off and on again?" Is not the solution I was looking for.

Hi @hbd120,

Thank you for your response.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e is generating a lot of event log messages, which can be concerning. Here’s how you can troubleshoot and possibly resolve these issues:

Check Event Log Messages:

  • Start by checking the specific messages in the event log to see if they provide any details about the issues. Often, the logs will indicate if there's a hardware problem, connectivity issue, or something else.

Firmware Update:

  • Ensure your printer has the latest firmware installed. You can check for updates through the printer's control panel or the HP Smart app.

Network Connection:

  • If your printer is networked, verify that it has a stable connection to your Wi-Fi. Check your router to ensure it's functioning correctly.

Power Cycle:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset any temporary issues.

Check Paper and Print Settings:

  • Ensure the paper is loaded correctly and that the print settings match the type of paper you're using. Sometimes, incorrect settings can trigger error messages.

Look for Physical Obstructions:

  • Open the printer and check for any paper jams, foreign objects, or issues with the printhead.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • If you have access to a computer, download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool. It can help identify and fix common printer problems.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Okay. I was directed to HP Support. I went. I tried the online chat and got a technician being assisted by the HP Tech Chatbot. I was instructed to factory reset my printer. Which I did. This was by the HP Tech Chatbot. I had to futz around and change my the connection on my PC from ethernet to WiFi, so I lost the connection to the chat. Once I was reconnected, I no longer had the HP Tech Chatbot, I had a supposed actual technician. I reinstalled my printer without the assistance of the technician, who kept insisting that I give him remote control of my desktop. The HP Tech Chatbot also asked for remote control? I declined and simply asked them to walk me through the steps. The "technician" asked me to "update my printer". Sent me instructions that were incomplete. I asked him if he meant "update firmware". He didn't respond. I then told him that my firmware was up to date and sent him the screen cap. I don't think he even read anything that I typed to him, nor did he review the previous chat texts from the HP Tech Chatbot. I told him the printer kicked out over 100 event errors, warnings, etc, immediately after rebooting from the factory reset. He then told me I had to do a factory reset. I told him no. That I had just performed a factory reset less than 10 minutes ago. He then insisted that this time, it would work. But it would work better if I gave him remote control of my desktop. I again declined. He again "insisted". I asked him if he had any idea what the errors and the critical errors meant. He responded that one meant something about firmware. I told him that was one of numerous errors. He then started in again about a factory reset and remote control. I said no and that I used to work in IT support and we would have fired people for the level of support he was providing and stated that I was saving a transcript and ending the chat. I fumed for hours afterwards. Does HP employ anyone who knows more than "turn it off and on again" or blow it away and start from factory? So frustrating. I'm dreading to have to call HP phone support. I have seven months left on my warranty and I'm getting tired of the printer being hung by the chimney with care, whenever I go to print, resulting in me having to *unplug it* because even the power button does nothing. I remember buying HP4 LaserJets, used, and having them just chug away. What has happened to HP?
