HP Deskjet 7300
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have owned my Deskjet 7300 for over a decade. It has worked superbly EXCEPT for the failure of the duplex to print the back side of each page correctly. Over the years HP released new versions of its driver for this printer. About half the drivers had the duplex working properly and the other half didn't. Unfortunately the final release of the driver software for Windows 10 (version 14.8.0 at https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-Officejet-7300-All-in-One-Printer-series/391181) got it wrong, and so now now matter what option you select for duplex printing (flip long edge, flip short edge), on a portrait document (and probably also a landscape) the second page ALWAYS prints upside down. I have seen dozens of people complain about this problem in multiple forums. There is always a pleasant-sounding HP employee who spends probably hours of time with absurd questions and equally absurd answers, and sometimes the problem is declared to be fixed, but it is never fixed. I've tried reinstalling the HP software multiple times (and my first installation on my new computers was after the final version was released, so we are not replacing old versions here) but it NEVER WORKS there is NEVER A SOLUTION. Is there any hope that this will ever be fixed???

Assuming the issue exists as described, the "fix it" days for this printer and its software are long past.

Product introduced in 2004

The last release of the software was in 2015 and the software "internals" are likely even older.

There are no hopeful Firmware updates listed.

The "Offline" doctor version MIGHT help, though - again, the driver is old and the printer is even older...

Resource – Choose the right doctor for the job

Open Website

HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows

Click the orange Download Now option / box

Wait!

If the problem / issue is one of

  • Printer is Offline
  • Cannot print in Color
  • Duplex printing has disappeared

THEN

Select / Answer question “Is print offline?” = YES

Answering Yes selects the “right doctor” version for these issues.

NOTES – The “Offline” doctor

As a result of repairing issues,

Offline / Color check / Duplex check version of the Doctor may replace the printer or add a “(Copy 1)” version of the driver in Devices and Printers.

Open Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Right-Click on the printer name > Printer Properties > Tab General >

In the top box, Edit the name of the printer (For example, remove “Copy 1”)

Click Apply / OK to save change

NOTE:  The name change may take a bit of time (a few minutes), else Restart the computer and log in.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Verify results.  If necessary, set the newly added / renamed printer as the default.

A secondary “Scan” printer may be added, that is, the “Do not Delete” driver / printer.  As it says, do not delete the entry.

I appreciate your responding but I am deeply confused by all this information. I understand that this is a very old unit but that doesn't change the fact that I am upset with HP for having repeatedly broken the software when the unit was still new and then leaving it broken in the final release of its drivers.

All that aside: I am focusing only on your "Edits / Update" which talks about changing an option relating to the orientation of scanned documents. My scanner is working fine and my issue has nothing to do with scanning or using the document feeder. My problem occurs only when printing multi-page documents (e.g. Word documents) in duplex mode. Why would changing a scanner option affect a printing problem that has nothing to do with the scanner? Thanks.

The FYI content has been removed.

True,  that section was not relevant to print.

If I have anything useful to add, I will post back.
