Envy 45000
macOS 10.12 Sierra

I'm having 2 issues re: updating the firmware on my Envy 4500.

1) The driver was updated no problem; however, I've tried numerous times to update the firmware without success. The file is downloaded with no problem; however, when I click on the file (HP Firmware updater app), it stalls during the "device discovery"; which is to say, the wheel spins indefinitely. I know that my computer and printer can connect, since printing does occur.

2) I should also mention that some pages are randomly printed full of errors; in other words, some sentences will be printed multiple times making a mess of the original text. I'm hoping the firmware update can solve this. Does this assumption make sense or should I post a separate query about this matter?

Thanks for your time.

@msr3, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thank you for the detailed information. If you are not able to update the printer firmware from the MAC, you may do it on the printer screen.

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Click here to download and install the latest firmware from your MAC.

Note: If the printer is up to date, the update may not go through with a similar notification.

To resolve the print quality issues, let us try these steps:

Try making a standalone copy and check if that works. By this, we can conclude if this is a hardware or a driver issue.

Align the printer

  1. On the printer control panel, press the down arrow  to select Align Printer, and then press OK.

The printer prints a test page, and then prompts you to scan the page.

  2. Place the alignment page with the print side down on the scanner glass. Position it according to the engraved guides around the glass.

  3. Close the scanner lid, and then touch OK.

Print a Print Quality Diagnostic report

  1. On the printer control panel, press the Down Arrow  to scroll to Tools, and then press OK.
  2. Press the Down Arrow  to scroll to Print Quality Report, and then press OK. The printer prints the test page.

Let me know how this goes.
