Windows 10. HP Officejet Pro 8600. I have used this printer for years. Recently it started occasionally presenting an error message on my desktop saying something about encountering errors with what I was printing. It would produce a couple of pages with crazy characters on them and then it would print my file anyway. Now, it is not printing anything, but the job in the print queue says "printing" for a few seconds and then disappears. It seems to be about the right amount of time for the job to have actually printed before it disappears. Printer status generally shows "idle", but occasionally it will show "offline" for about a half-second, then back to "idle". The printer will copy okay, but not print something coming from the computer. I have power-cycled the printer, rebooted Windows, unplugged/plugged the USB cable connecting the printer, reinstalled the printer driver. I have found some other posts for problems that sound like this, but they are several years old and the recommended fixes don't seem to apply because of that (uninstall Windows updates).

Hi @KarlKirkman,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If the print jobs in the queue say "printing" but nothing is actually being printed, it could be due to a number of reasons. Here are a few things you can try to resolve the issue.
- Check the printer connections: Make sure the printer is properly connected to your computer or network, and that it is turned on.
- Restart the printer: Sometimes, simply turning the printer off and back on again can resolve printing issues. Wait a few moments before turning the printer back on.
- Clear the print queue: There could be a stuck or corrupted print job in the queue that is preventing other jobs from printing. Clear the print queue and try printing again.
- Update the printer drivers: Outdated or corrupt printer drivers can also cause printing problems. Check for any available updates and install them if necessary.
- Check for paper jams: Check for any paper jams or other obstructions in the printer, as this can also prevent printing.
- Restart your computer: A simple restart of your computer can often resolve many software-related issues, including printing problems.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
