Hi all,
I have a HP Photosmart 5524 All-in-one Printer. I recently bought some 21 per page labels to make Christmas gift labels etc. The labels should be compatible to Avery L7160 or J8160, however, when I create them & hit print, the first one is ok, but then from the 2nd one onwards, they merge into each other, leaving a huge gap at the bottom of the page & slightly out from side to side.
I have checked that the pre-set settings are as they should be & I have tried creating a custom label, using a ruler to measure the borders, label height & width, vertical & horizontal pitch, but it still prints wrong with the massive gap at the bottom & merging into each other.
I have tried Avery's online labels packs, I have aligned the printer, installed the latest drivers etc on my printer, changed the margins to a custom one that should fit the borders of the label page, I have asked the manufacturer, but nothing. It was suggested to check the "Scaling" on the printer, but I have no idea how to do that. I am only printing in A4, & that is what the printer is set up as. I haven't changed any settings, so don't see why that would be out of sync?
Any advice would be appreciated? Or is my printer due to be thrown over the balcony?
Thank you for your time.
Sian.

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.
An older version of the full driver printer software is available for Windows 11 all the way back to XP.
I found a review on the printer dated 2013.
Is the printer ready for the recycle bin (or balcony toss)? No idea.

Scale
In this context, Scale is the size of the output as it compares to 100% of the size of the original data.
Depending on the data (how it was made), 100% might be the same thing as "Actual Size". When printed, the accuracy of content printed in "Actual Size" might be impacted by margins, boundaries, or borders (that are) either added to the data or are a consequence of the way the software interprets the content.
A file at "100%" of its original size might not fit on a single sheet of paper of a given size. Shrinking the entire document adjusts the content fit within the defined margins and edges of the paper.
How you change the scale depends on the software you are using.
For Example,
Adobe Reader DC provides several methods to adjust Scale, including
- Fit
- Actual Size
- Shrink oversized pages
- Custom Scale (some percentage of 100%)
Specialty Printing
- Poster (large printing that splits the content onto more than one sheet of paper)
- Booklet
Example - Adobe Reader DC - Avery Template J8160 - A4
Avery_J8160_Sample_Label_2

What happened?
Could be anything, including (and not limited to):
- The label paper surface is not suitable for the printer -- perhaps the rollers slip when trying to feed the sheet. Test your template by printing on regular paper.
- The scale is in need of adjustment. Try "Fit" or a custom scale. Test on regular paper.
- The printer is dirty - the same rollers that feed the paper need to be cleaned during regular maintenance.
- The printer needs to be "Reset"
- The printer software is in need of being completely removed, every piece, and reloaded.
- The printer is worn from years of service.
