Hi - my printer ran out of ink so I replaced the toner. Printer did not recognize new toner and still gives the "install black cartridge" error. After doing some trouble shooting (turned off and on, unplugged and plugged in, cleaned contacts) I tried another toner cartridge - same thing. These cartridges are like $100 a piece. HELP!

Having a printer not recognize a new toner cartridge can indeed be frustrating, especially when you've already tried troubleshooting steps. Here are some additional steps you can take to try and resolve the issue.

 

  • Check the Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure that the replacement toner cartridge is compatible with your HP LaserJet M1212nf MFP. Sometimes, even if a cartridge looks identical, there could be subtle differences in the chip or design that prevent proper recognition.
  • Inspect the Old Cartridge: If possible, reinsert the old toner cartridge (if you still have it) and see if the printer recognizes it. This can help determine if the issue lies with the printer or the new toner cartridges.
  • Update Firmware: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. Sometimes, outdated firmware can cause compatibility issues with new cartridges. You can usually find firmware updates on HP's official website.
  • Clean Contacts Again: While you've already cleaned the contacts, it's worth trying again. Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water (or isopropyl alcohol if needed) to clean both the contacts on the toner cartridge and inside the printer where the cartridge makes contact.
  • Reset Printer: Perform a cold reset on your printer. This process can vary depending on the model, so refer to your printer's manual or HP's support website for specific instructions.
