My HP Laserjet makes  a screeching/squealing sound when printing.  This has been going on for several weeks and is quite loud.  Sounds like an alarm.  I need to make it stop!  Any suggestions?

Cartridges often can cause a loud squealing noise and is the first thing we try in the shop.

Thank you, I did change the toner cartridge, twice, with no luck.  I also changed the outlet so it is no longer plugged into my battery backup, but it still screams while printing.

Are you sure it is not the battery backup alarm going off? To test, on the control panel of the printer, print off any type of report and see if you get the noise. If yes, then unplug the printer, move it to a completely different room and try to print the same report there. If you get no noise then likely you have an overloaded circuit and when the printer tries to print a page it is causing a major voltage drop which is causing your UPS to switch to battery and generate an alarm. Please note that aside from very large industrial ups system, battery backups are not intended to deal with the large inrush current that a laser printer demands.

I am sure it is not the battery backup.  I unplugged everything from the unit and plugged it in a power bar.  The unit is still screaming.

I put the printer in quiet mode, and that seems to have solved the problem of the screaming.  Now the printer is just running too slow.  The finicky thing is screaming or making me wait for my copies.  No winning today!

NO UPS NO POWERBAR, both of these devices can cause random printer problems, as per HP manuals, device must be plugged into a wall outlet. Even a small printer like this will draw up to 10 amps on startup and during printing. If the printer is quieter running in quiet mode than either you several bad cartridges (NON HP cartridges are notorious for noise) or you have a drivetrain issue that would require service.
