Laserjet 1536dnf
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Just recently my Laserjet 1536dnf scanner stops working after a restart of my computer. After restart, I get a message that my scanner cannot be connected when I try to scan. I use the Printer and Scanner Doctor and the scanner problem solver stops at the Windows (WIA) Scan and won't go any further - just spins. I checked and Windows WIA is running. To fix, I have to uninstall all printer software and reinstall, a process that takes up to 45 minutes. Why, after a restart, does the scanner gets hung up at the WIA scan? How do I fix this issue?

Thanks so much.

@1220grj Welcome to HP Community!

I understand that you are unable to scan.

Do not worry. I will try to fix the issue.

Have you been able to plug in the USB in any of the computers and try scanning that way?  The USB connection can be temporary but its a good way to check to see if the software and the printer are OK.  If the printer is scanning USB then there is a possibility a port in the router has been closed, causing scanning to be blocked.   You may need to contact your router company to ensure the incoming and outgoing scanning ports are open.

Another thing I would suggest is checking to see if the printer has its most up to date firmware.  I have located a firmware update on the HP web site.  Please follow the link to HP LaserJet Pro M1536dnf Multifunction Printer Drivers.

IMPORTANT! When running a Firmware update on the printer you MUST have it plugged into the computer with the USB cable. The reason is because the update goes from the computer to the printer.  If the WiFi connection hiccups at all during the update it can damage the firmware in the printer possibly rendering it useless.

  1. Select your operating system and click next
  2. Scroll down and click Firmware (1)
  3. Click download next to HP LaserJet Firmware Update Utility
  4. Before running firmware update you MUST plug in the USB
  5. Run firmware update and and printer will restart
  6. Try scanning again

The issue is more of a software/Microsoft 10 issue. If I restart my computer or shut down and start, my scanner doesn't work. Error messages state that the scanner is not connected when it is - printer still works. When I use HP Print and Scan Doctor to try to fix it, it hangs up on the Microsoft WIA. Then, in order to have my scanner back, I have to uninstall and re-install the complete drivers all over again, which takes up about 45 minutes of my time. I use the scanner in work every day and need it to function.

@1220grj

Thank you for the update.

In that case, You can run the SFC scan. you can refer to this Link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/4026529/windows-10-using-system-file-checker

Check for the windows update.

Windows Updates -

1) In the search box, type, and open Windows Updates.

2) Check for updates.

3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Have a nice day!!

Hi,
From the search bar type CMD, right-click on Command-Line and select Run as Administrator, be sure to confirm any prompt by pressing Yes.

Past the following command and press enter:

Sc config stisvc depend= rpcss/ShellHWDetection

Now restart your computer and try scanning, may you see any difference?

Thanks for the info, Praveen196, but that didn't work.

No, that didn't work either. I appreciate both of you. Here is the error message I get: "Scanner Unreachable" "Scanner communication cannot be established. Ensure your product is powered on (it is), and ensure your network is functioning properly (it is - I can print). If these conditions are correct, restart the product and try scanning (multiple times). If you are installed using a cable connection , USB or Ethernet, ensure both ends of the cable are secure (it is as I can still print). If you installed this printer by IP address, then you might need to update the IP address (not connected this way).If you are running firewall software, it may be blocking scan communication (I'm not wireless)". That's it.

When I run the HP Printer and Scanner Doctor, the scan stops at "Microsoft WIA scan" - it just spins and doesn't go any further. Driving me crazy!!

Thank you

George
