Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have to major problems. They both lead to not been able to print. Tomorrow a have a big event where I need the printer to run.

1. The printer stopped yesterday working out of nowhere. The problem is know here. There is a yellow explanation mark in the HP Smart Software and on the printer itself. The message in HP Smart says there is a error with my account and I won't be able to print soon. But the printer already stopped working. So it's a software/account problem.

2. When I go to HP Smart on my PC and try to login to my HP account. My browser opens, I enter my login data. Then there comes always a error message on the website (translated from German): An error has happened. The time limit for the connection to the server has reached. The server won't answer. (And then in English): Network connection issue.

This problem appeared out of nowhere. I didn't change anything. Same wifi router.

Now I moved the printer to a big event that I organized and I need it to run. There I reset the printer by pushing the wifi + X button for 5 seconds. I open HP Smart on my phone (since the PC app won't let my login) and setup the printer as new. I enter the wifi data and then a blank page appears and the yellow explanation stays active on the printer.

What steps I have to do to fix that? How can I use the printer without having my computer being logged in to HP?

I called the HP support. They told me I have to set my wifi router to 2,4GHz. This solved it. The cable didn't work at all.

Hi @MirkoKay,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with both software and connectivity issues with your HP printer. Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the problems.

  • Check Network Connection: Ensure that your printer is properly connected to the Wi-Fi network. Check the Wi-Fi settings on the printer and make sure it's connected to the correct network with the correct password. Also, verify that your PC and phone are connected to the same network.
  • Restart Devices: Sometimes, simply restarting your devices can resolve connectivity issues. Turn off your printer, PC, and router. Wait for a few minutes, then turn them back on in the following order: router, printer, and PC.
  • Update Firmware: Ensure your printer has the latest firmware installed. You can usually do this through the printer's settings menu. Updating the firmware can fix bugs and improve performance.
  • Reset Printer: Since you've already tried resetting the printer, try performing a factory reset. This will restore the printer to its default settings. Refer to your printer's manual for instructions on how to perform a factory reset.
  • HP Smart App Troubleshooting: If you're encountering errors when logging into your HP account through the HP Smart app on your PC, try accessing your HP account through a web browser instead. Visit the HP website and log in with your credentials to ensure your account is working properly.
  • Reinstall HP Smart App: If the HP Smart app on your PC continues to give you errors, try uninstalling and reinstalling the app. This can sometimes fix software glitches.
  • Print Without HP Smart: If you're unable to resolve the issues with HP Smart, you can still print without being logged into your HP account. Most printers allow you to print directly from your device (PC, phone, tablet) without needing to go through HP Smart. Simply select the printer from the print menu of the document or photo you want to print.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

That sounds a lot like, try this and that. But not like a specific solution for my problems.

How can I connect the M140 to a Wifi network without HP Smart?

Hi @MirkoKay,

Thank you for your response,

Connecting HP M140 to Wi-Fi without HP Smart:

Using the Printer's Control Panel: Most printers, including the HP M140, allow you to manually input Wi-Fi settings using their control panel. Here's a generic process:

  • Press the wireless button on the printer's control panel.
  • Select the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to.
  • Enter the Wi-Fi password if prompted.
  • Follow any on-screen instructions.

WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup): If your router supports WPS, you can connect your printer to the Wi-Fi network using WPS. Here's how:

  • Press the WPS button on your router.
  • Within 2 minutes, press the WPS button on your printer.
  • The printer should connect to the Wi-Fi network automatically.

Using Embedded Web Server (EWS): You can access the printer's Embedded Web Server through a web browser on a device connected to the same network. From there, you can navigate to the Wireless or Network settings and manually input the Wi-Fi details.

Connecting HP M140 to PC without HP Smart:

USB Cable Connection: The simplest way to connect your printer directly to your PC is via a USB cable. Ensure the printer is powered on, connect it to your PC using a USB cable, and follow any on-screen instructions to install drivers if necessary.

Wi-Fi Direct: If your printer supports Wi-Fi Direct, you can connect your PC to the printer without the need for a Wi-Fi network. Here's how:

  • On the printer's control panel, navigate to Wi-Fi Direct settings.
  • Enable Wi-Fi Direct.
  • On your PC, open the list of available Wi-Fi networks and look for the printer's Wi-Fi Direct network.
  • Connect to the printer's Wi-Fi Direct network.
  • Install the printer drivers if prompted.

Ethernet Connection: If your printer and PC both have Ethernet ports and you have an Ethernet cable, you can connect the printer directly to your PC using the cable. Then, configure the printer on your PC as a network printer.

Try these methods and see if they help resolve your connectivity issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I found out there is a sticker on the back of the printer. It says don't use usb, use wifi. I removed the sticker, there really is a usb port. Connected to pc, the printer gets automatically installed and I try to print a test page. The printer makes a sound and then nothing. I pushed the "copy" button on the printer to see if it can print at all. It prints out a test page and another page claiming "Without an Internet connection I might lose the ability to print soon". The printer doesn't except print jobs from the pc that it is connect to via usb.
This was explained by me in the beginning of this post. There is a weird account/has to be online thing going on. How can I turn this off? I connected the printer now finally to my wifi again. Then it says I need to connect to my account, there is a problem. When I connect through the HP Smart software to my account, I get the same error message that I described in the beginning of this post. How do I turn off that my printer needs a HP account AND needs to be connect the internet?
And I reinstalled everything. Turned off and on everything. Tried different devices.

I now was able to connect to my HP Smart account through the HP Smart App on Windows. I had to switch to a different browser so it works. But the printer still doesn't print. It's connect to my wifi and internet. It got a ip through my DHCP server. It's installed and connect through HP smart to my pc. Windows sees the printer and I can select the printer in Word. The printer makes a sound and then doesn't print anything.
