When I print double sided, the printer stops in mid-job, starts cleaning, then "printing error". Also prints double sided for a few pages, then an out-of-order single page then back to double sided--and this keeps repa=eating.

This problem can be caused by worn or dirty rollers in the printer. The misfeed forces the printer to run a cleaning cycle to remove toner from the transfer belt. Pickup roller should be a consistent gray or black color and have fine fingerprint like ridges on it. Clean or replace if you find dirt or wear. Removing the paper tray should allow you to examine  the rollers, though you may need to tilt the printer up to get a good look

On the 255dw, when I take out the paper tray, I see only a small white roller. If I open the back I see a gray foam roller. it does not seem very dirty but I do see two slightly red bands on it, one on each side. Is that the right roller and how do I clean it. I don't get the remark about fingerprints, Thanks

This printer uses the same roller as other models. Watch this video to see how to locate and check https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLxkvYV87Hw

As for the fingerprints comment. Oils from your hands can transfer to the roller and cause print defects as the sections with oil carry a different static charge than the rest of the roller, resulting in uneven toner application.
