Quick question, if you were connected via wireless, did you shut off wireless as well? I am seeing a few users here with this issue and trying to get an idea of what is going on. Can you try restarting with absolutely NO connections including wireless to see if the printer will start in stand alone mode and post back.

Hi, Printer was connected via wireless, printer was not scanning to email following firmware update so decided to restore factory settings, following this the issue arose, it is in a constant start loop with black HP screen boot bar along the bottom runs about half and then the initializing page starts for a few seconds then the error code "49 Service Error Turn off then on" screen then repeat.

Machine has been totally down-powered, disconnected and powered /up in various configs (doors open /closed, cartridges removed/installed)

Machine was also started as standalone and still runs the error cycle.

Thanks for the help anything you can advise is appreciated

Can you confirm that wireless was disabled or your wireless router was turned off?

the wireless was not disabled at the time of factory reset, and wireless router was on at the time of factory reset

To answer the question, I've tried turning wireless base station off (wireless network is off), unplugging Ethernet cable, and combinations of Ethernet plugged in or wireless on. Nothing helps. It's in an endless boot cycle always showing error code 49 and then restarting. The firmware is clearly broken given all the people reporting problems with it. You'd think HP would test before pushing out. I just hope they work to resolve the issue.

After 20221010 and the 49 service error was displayed, my 3yo M281fdw printer was completely disabled.  Numerous attempts to unplug everything including my modem and router and then plugging things back in in various order did not change anything.  20221010 acted like a malicious computer virus for me.  I purchased an Epson ecotank 5150 printer (print, copy, scan; 5170 has fax also) on Nov. 1, 2022 (after spending way too much time trying to save the M281fdw) and am very happy with it.  Took the M281fdw to the recycling center as 20221010 rendered it useless.  Never buying another HP printer or expensive laserjet toner cartridge again.
