Color LaserJet MFP M281fdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

please advise:

I get a SUPPLY MEMORY ERROR after changing catridges on my  MFP M281fdw (firmware of 04.19.2019). I have chosen to use cheaper and more eco-friendly re-used catridges as the pricing on new genuine HP catridges is completely unmanagable and ludicrous. I have spent 500$ on this printer and I I'd like it to work even if I, a customer, decide to replace the catridges with non-genuine ones. The fact HP is blocking my ability to use third-party catridges is a complete violation of my rights as a customer. I bought a printer, the ink I chose to use, provided it is compatible, is up to me.

I have done hard re-sets, plugged it in and out of the socket. I have tried everything.

Please advise.

Thank you

Hi @blueplan,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

You may refill your cartridges or use remanufactured cartridges, but you may run into problems. HP will not guarantee the functionality of those ink cartridges.

Try the steps below -

Make sure that there is no packing material inside the printer

Typically, this error message is caused by packing material left inside the printer. Follow these steps to remove all packing material from inside the printer.

  1. Open the cartridge access door.

  2. Lift up the paper packing material, but do not remove it.

To prevent damage to the print cartridge, hold the print cartridge at each end.

  7. Remove the orange clip from the end of the print cartridge. Pull up on the orange clip until it breaks off the print cartridge.

  8. Gently rock the print cartridge back and forth to distribute the toner evenly.

  9. Bend the tab on the left side of the print cartridge until the tab breaks loose. Pull the tab to remove all the sealing tape from the print cartridge.

       CAUTION:

If toner gets on your clothes, wipe it off with a dry cloth, and then wash the clothing in cold water. Hot water sets toner into the fabric.

  10. Insert the print cartridge, and then close the print cartridge door.

  11. Check the control panel for any error messages

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thank you for your reply, Jay

I already tried a lot.

It's probably the firmware.
Can I download the firmware from 2018 or earlier somewhere?

We do not have that firmware available, have you tried the updating the firmware on the printer?

Also, try updating the printer's firmware - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware
