This printer is the worst I've ever had. It frequently has issues like the never-ending firmware update loop, becoming unavailable on the network, waking up right after going idle, and now it has a new bug: it turns completely off after a while.
It's not going idle, but switching completely off. I have to manually power it on by pushing on the button each time I want to print. Trying to access it from the network doesn't wake it up, of course.
My energy settings are like before; this bug came suddenly without my modifying anything to the settings:
- Sleep/Auto Off After Inactivity: 30 Minutes
- Shut Down After Inactivity: 4 Hours
- Delay when ports are active: OFF
I had to disable "Delay when ports are active", otherwise it wakes up all the time... I wish HP finally released a debugged firmware for that printer, but they conveniently removed it from the market and ended all support.
Does anyone have an idea of how to fix this new bug?

Doing the reset cycle - again! - by pressing the bottom right corner of the display when the printer boots solved that problem for now.
The problem with that printer is that I need to do that regularly when the printer breaks down in various ways: endless reboot cycle, disconnection from the network, erratic shut downs, etc.
It's the last time I buy a printer from HP. It was the same unreliability with the previous printer, and the same lack of user-friendliness / smartness in the menus (why do I have to press 4 or 5 keys for each copy?). That, and the revelations about the cartridges' premature end of life (and what happens if we use 3rd-party cartridges)...

@TomMoss, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding MFP M283fdw turning itself completely off!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
It sounds like your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw is experiencing a power-related firmware issue. Here are some steps you can try to resolve it:
1. Check for the Latest Firmware Update
Even though you mentioned the printer gets stuck in a firmware update loop, it's still worth checking if an update is available.
- Go to HP's official website and check for the latest firmware version.
- Try updating using a USB connection instead of over the network to avoid looping issues.
- If an update fails, try rolling back to an older firmware version (if available).
2. Disable Auto Shut Down (if possible)
Since your printer is turning off completely instead of idling, try modifying the auto shut-down settings:
- Access the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS):
- Find your printer’s IP address from the printer’s control panel (under Network settings).
- Enter the IP address in a web browser.
- Navigate to Settings → Power Management and disable "Shut Down After Inactivity".
3. Check Power and Network Settings
- Try plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet instead of a power strip or surge protector.
- If using Wi-Fi, test if switching to a wired Ethernet connection improves stability.
- Reset network settings and reconnect manually.
4. Perform a Factory Reset
If the issue persists, resetting the printer to factory defaults might help:
- On the printer’s touchscreen, go to Setup → Service → Restore Defaults.
- Select "Restore Factory Defaults" and reconfigure the printer.
Let me know if any of these steps help, or if you need further guidance!
Take care, and have an amazing day!
