I know that this has been up for discussion earlier. My printer is printing sometimes ok but every second time it prints these symbols like 20 pages. I read in an old post that I should try to update the firmware of the printer. I tried but as I have a cromebook I cant download anything on the laptop. I tried to update directly from the printer as it was given as one option but it was not possible. Also tried to use the smart app but I was not able to find the path that was suggested.

This printer is second day in use so very frustrating indeed.

Any suggestions how I can try to solve the problem?

Hello,

How to upgrade the firmware through the embedded web server (EWS):

Power ON the machine and check the IP address.
Download the firmware file from HP Color Laser MFP 178nw, 178nwg, 179fnw, 179fwg Firmware File to the PC desktop.

Turn the printer off and then back on to clear the main printer's memory.

  1. Open an browser and tyoe the printer IP address in the URL line.
  2.  Click Login.
  3. Login Pop up will appear and type admin account. Default user name: admin, password:
  4. Click the Maintenance tab, and then click the Upgrade Wizard.
  5. The Firmware Upgrade Wizard window will popup. Click the Browse button.
  6. Select the firmware downloaded in your PC and click the open and then click Next.
  7. The firmware verification process will start. Please wait...
  8. After verification, click the Next.
Note: DO NOT power cycle the machine or the PC during this process or the machine may become unstable and or unusable without further attention from HP. The flash firmware update can take up to 5 minutes to complete. Please be patient.
  9. The firmware uploading will start.
  10. After a few minutes, the programming will start.
  11. After Programming, the printer will reboot automatically. The firmware upgrade procedure complete.
  12. Login to printer EWS and check the firmware version.

Hello

Thanks for helping out!

I got stuck already when trying to login to the printer. I put the ID as admin but what do I need to put as password? Your post didnt say it...

@Mika65

Hello and thanks for your return,

The default password is (blank) in the printer page (EWS).

  • There is no default value, if the machine needs a password to access the EWS, it is because someone has already set a password.

Otherwise, try the following solution:

  1. Make sure the printer is connected to a network.

  2. On the control panel, print a report of your network configuration.

  3. Look at the bottom of the page
    Example PIN Number:

    Mans_0-1643723400892.png
  4. The magic is the SSID written as Current SSID, the password written as Network Key and the buildin IP address.

  5. Now, connect with a machine with a wifi adapter such as a computer, to the SSID and type in the mentioned password.

  6. Login to the Embedded Web Server with admin and the password written as PIN Number.

  7. Apply the latest firmware from https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/MFP170/HP_Color_Laser_MFP170_Series_V3.82.01.13.z....

  8. Change at least the admin password.

OK, I got in with the pin code as password. Now when I try to upgrade the wizard it doesnt recognize the file I downloaded. And I cant open it with the Chromebook. I tried to look for extensions that could open it but couldnt find any. I also can't update  straight on the printer. So the problem now is the chromebook...

Hello and thanks for your return,

I understand that you get an error when you try to update the printer firmware.

You have to unzip the file HP_Color_Laser_MFP170_Series_V3.82.01.13.zip. To unzip a zip file on a Chromebook you can use ZIP Extractor.

  • Open an browser and tyoe the printer IP address in the URL line.
  • Click Login.
  • Login Pop up will appear and type admin account. Default user name: admin, password:
  • Click the Maintenance tab, and then click the Upgrade Wizard.
  • Select Browse and browse to the location where you extracted the files.
  • Select the firmware file MFP178_179_V3.82.01.13_DEC-20-2021_ONEROM_DS.hd and click Open.
  • Click Next and then wait for the wizard to verify the firmware.
  • When prompted, check the firmware version, select Next, and then wait for the firmware to upload to the copier.
  • Wait for the firmware Programming process to complete and for the copier to restart.
NOTE: This will take several minutes. Do not interrupt this process.
  • Follow any remaining on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
  • Print a configuration page to verify the installed firmware version after the update process.

Hello again

Yes, I had it unzipped but tried to open the file instead of using it on EWS...

So, firmware is now updated and first print job went fine except instead of 2 copies I got only one so I printed again and after a very long hesitation it started to print again these symbols.

Looks like the problem lies somewhere else then...

Do you experience the same problem when you make a copy directly from the printer's control panel?

Is your Chromebook up to date?
