Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

New installation of MS Office365 in Windows 10-64.  If I want duplex printing even though it is default printer setup on this machine, and I choose duplex printing on both printer-setup in Word, and on Word's menu  as soon as I send the print job to the queue I'm given the instructions for manual double side printing.  Is it possible that Microsoft hasn't heard that the 5540 does duplex printing.  And yes, I've loaded most recent firmware to printer which is the  2020-06-04 rev.

I see I'm not the only one to have this problem. It also looks as if it wasn't solved.

Did your installation of the printer include installing the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software?

If YES, and if the full driver printer printer software is functioning as expected,

then Word will (should) be aware of supported duplex printing options for supported paper size and type.

Printer Software not installed OR software Installed but not working?

Check / Install the latest available Full Feature Software for your printer.

Your Full Feature Software / full driver printer software installation package:

HP ENVY 5540 series Full Feature Software and Drivers

Software Check

NOTE:  If the printer software shows installed but is not working,

Uninstall the printer software from Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features

Restart the computer and log in

Reminder:  If using USB, disconnect the USB printer cable between the printer and the computer before installing software.  (Re)Connect the USB cable when instructed to do so near the end of the installation procedure.

Download-Save-Install a fresh copy of the Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software

Restart the computer and log in

Example

  • Download and Save the printer installation package for the “Full driver

Next

  • Navigate to the folder in which you saved the software installation package (likely Downloads)
  • Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator" to start the installation
  • Reminder:  If using USB > Connect the USB cable when instructed (toward the end of the installation)
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

What else?

Printing Preferences are used to set the Shortcut and properties for the current job.

Make sure your Preferences are set.

The printer software (for example, Printer Assistant and Word) and other software / applications (for example, HP Smart) can Print duplex in PDF files on supported paper sizes and types (plain or brochure paper, for example)

Printing Preferences can be used to create a Custom Shortcut.

Create the shortcut then leave it as the "preferred" (selected) shortcut.

It will remain the default until you change it for a different job type.

Set the Preferences – Windows

NOTES

  • This section is not applicable to Mobile Printing.
  • Access to the complete Printer Preferences requires having installed the Full Driver printer software.
  • Printing Preferences are available directly from the driver.
  • Printing Envelopes?  See NOTE

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Right-Click on your printer > Printing Preferences

  • When called from within printing software / applications, Printing Preferences might be called "Printer Properties" / "Shortcuts" / “More Settings” / “Properties” or similar.

NOTE >> Preferences and Envelopes

Select / leave Printing Preferences Shortcut to "Everyday Printing" or something equally benign.
