Hi @Macbob2024,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP LaserJet MFP 4101 printer stays paused and you can't unpause it on your iMac running macOS Sonoma 14.2.1, here are some steps to help resolve the issue:
1. Check Printer Status
- Verify Printer Connection: Ensure that the printer is properly connected to your iMac, whether via USB or network. Check cables and connections.
- Check Printer Display: Make sure there are no error messages or alerts on the printer’s display panel.
2. Reset the Print System
- Open System Preferences: Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences.
- Printers & Scanners: Select Printers & Scanners.
- Reset Printing System:
- Right-click (or Control-click) on the printer list and select Reset Printing System.
- Confirm the reset and wait for the system to restart.
- Re-add the Printer: After resetting, re-add your HP LaserJet MFP 4101 by clicking the + button and following the setup prompts.
3. Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers
- Download Latest Drivers:
- Visit the HP Support website and download the latest macOS drivers for the LaserJet MFP 4101.
- Install Drivers:
- Follow the installation instructions provided with the driver download.
- Restart your computer after installation.
4. Check Print Queue and Pause Status
- Open Print Queue:
- Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Select your HP LaserJet MFP 4101 and click Open Print Queue.
- Resume Printer:
- If the printer status shows Paused, click on the Resume button. If the button is grayed out, ensure that the printer is correctly selected and connected.
5. Verify Printer Configuration
- Printer Setup:
- Ensure that the printer is set up correctly in Printers & Scanners.
- Verify that the correct printer model is selected and configured.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

I had the same problem.
IPP fixes it.
You can also select the
HP LaserJet Pro MFP 4101
from the list of printers to add, but then don't use the default given in the
Use: selection box.
Instead select
Generic PCL Printer
or
Select Software . . .
HP LaserJet Series PCL 4/5
Both work.
The latter (for MFP 4101fdw) also recognizes the Scanner and makes it available for use,
but to get the Fax you have to use the original Use: setting and it will then ask for and install a separate Printer Fax entry.
