I am unable to get Magenta to print.
I just put in a new ink -same as the one that was in previously.
I have run the testing for the ink, cleaned and did secondary cleaning.
Magenta is not printing when it was in the previous ink cartridge
besides cleaning what can i do to get my Envy 4520 to print color correctly?
thank you

Hi @Johnsonpartyof6,
Good Day. A warm welcome to the HP community. I reviewed the case regarding issues with the magenta cartridge, not printing. Superb description, brilliant troubleshooting and terrific observations made before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂 I will be delighted to assist you here.
For better clarity, and to assist you correctly, I would require more information regarding this:
- Did this happen after a power outage or surge?
- Did you print a printer diagnostics report?
For now, please try these steps:
- Please perform all the prescribed steps from this link: http://hp.care/2iCkhec to resolve print quality issues.
- Print the print quality report and check if magenta gets printed.
- If it does not then the printer’s hardware may be faulty and needs to be replaced by contacting HP phone support as another cartridge has already been tried and the original one also did not work.
- You could try replacing the other cartridges and check initially.
HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://hp.care/2r9wSvP
- Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.
- Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.
- Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.
- Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.
They will be happy to assist you immediately.
If the unit is under warranty, the manufacturer’s warranty should take care of it for you.
If it prints the diagnostics page correctly, then uninstall and reinstall the printer software and it should fix the issue.
- Uninstall the printer from "programs and features" which can be accessed by doing a right-click on the Windows button (Please have the printer Off and disconnected during uninstallation.)
- Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it. (Right click on the Windows button to access device manager)
- Go to devices and printers, select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.
- Click on print server properties.
- You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there if any.
- Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.
- Restart the PC.
- Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,
- Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.
- It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files).
- If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.
- Ignore the Regedit option if it cannot be done.
- Restart the PC again.
Then download the latest full feature driver from http://hp.care/2gQYX7a and install it on the computer after selecting the correct operating system.
Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.
This should fix the issue.
If this does not do the trick, please download the Windows Built-in drivers by following instructions from this link: http://hp.care/2o3acvH
Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient.Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat. 🙂
Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes.
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help.
If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.
Take care now and have a splendid week ahead. 🙂

Magenta not printing; I have the same issue with an Envy 5660 All-in-One. I have gone through all the steps laid out and every time I print a "Print Quality Diagnostic" report everything looks good except there is no Magenta in the box; it is white. The ink supply level is ~50% for the multi-color ink cartridge.

Hi! @hudson3510, Welcome to HP forums.
I understand you have issues printing in magenta colour from your printer.
Don't worry I'll try to help you out.
Did you make any changes to your printer?
Have you tried checking with a different ink cartridge?
Have you tried printing from a different application?
Are you able to make a colour copy of your printer?
Please share the operating system you are running on your PC to assist you better.
As the magenta color is printing on the diagnostics page, it looks like an issue with the driver.
Try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers from the root level on your PC and install the full feature printer software. (Windows Only)
In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
Select your HP printer.
Select Uninstall.
In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.
In the Devices and Printers window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.”
Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
Click on Drivers tab.
Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click remove at the bottom.
Select OK.
Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.
Close Devices and Printers.
Update the printer software using this link. Click Here
Also, Follow these steps to check the print settings for your print job. (Windows Only)
-
In the software application you are trying to print from, click File, and then click Print.
The Print window opens.
-
Open the Properties dialog box.
Depending on the software application, the button might be Properties, Options, Printer Setup, Printer, or Preferences.
-
Depending on your print job, you might consider modifying the following settings:
-
Paper Type: If you are printing on photo paper, select the type of photo paper you are attempting to print on.
-
Print Quality: If you are dissatisfied with the quality of your printouts, increase the print quality. To print more quickly, decrease the print quality. These options typically include Best, Normal, and Draft modes.
-
Paper Size: If you are printing on a different size of paper than you normally print on, select the correct paper size.
-
Black and White: If you want to print in black and white only, select the grayscale option.
-
-
After selecting the print settings, click OK to apply the settings, and then click Print.

Let me know if this helps!
Have a beautiful day ahead! 🙂

It looks like you were interacting with @A4Apollo, but he is out for the day & I'll be glad to help you out.
Since the print quality test report does not contain Magenta, it's a possible ink cartridge or printer failure. Power resetting the printer, performing an automated and manual cartridge cleaning may resolve the issue. Let's try these steps:
1) Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector
2) Remove all of your ink cartridges from the printer and close the door
3) Remove the power cord from the back of the printer (Do no press the power button)
4) Clean the electrical contacts, refer to solution 3 from this document.
5) Plug the power cord back into the printer
6) Wait for the printer to turn on completely, then install the ink cartridges.
7) On the printer control panel, swipe the display to scroll to Setup, and then touch the Setup icon .
😎 Swipe the display to scroll to Printer Maintenance, and then touch Printer Maintenance.
9) Touch Clean Page Smears.
10) On the printer control panel, swipe the display to the left, and then touch Setup.
11) Swipe the display up, and then touch Printer Maintenance.
12) Touch Clean Cartridges. Touch Proceed when prompted to continue the next level of cleaning. Repeat these steps for the third cleaning stage.
Let me know how it goes!

I followed the tread of conversation in the same issue I am now experiencing. I deleted and reinstalled the newer print driver. However my OS Mac 10.14.4 is not listed. I tried another new color cartridge--same result NO magenta.
I followed the entire llist of power, restart, test instructions.
Still no magenta, was this issue ever solved successfully?
Right now I have a B&W printer with a scanner -- Not exactly what I need.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
